Between the Lines

I waited an hour in the car,
while another rainstorm
flooded the earth, trying
to get up enough courage and composure,
before calling to have him open the door
if company was wanted or needed.

I left a message on an answering machine...
allowing him time to decide.

Then, I saw him today
spending five hours
of worrisome feelings,
as he spoke in gasped whispers
and told of a dizziness
that had me on the phone.

He looked very thin,
beautifully bald
but carrying a loneliness
in his shoulders
every time he tilted his head back
to get a better breath of air.

Needing more than nourishment
from a feeding tube,
we spent needed time elsewhere,
being hydrated for an hour or so,
as I listened to the calming
of each breath.

It will be five years come June
and I dread the thought
that he may join her sooner
than any of us wish,
having learned of this himself
only five weeks before.

Home again, he joked
about taking me out to dinner.
When I asked what would he do when there
he said "just watch me eat."
Always a sense of humor,
no matter the situation.

And before I left
he had a picture taken of us
by my Godson, his youngest
and made sure that
while sharing a goodbye hug,
he would give me
that brother-in-law signature of his:
a pat on the ......

that would always make me blush.

Geez, Maureen, that's sad, but so beautifully worded as only you can do. I truly love your way of telling a story, even as sad as this one is. Your words just keep hanging in ones mind.

Love, Titia

Yo Nakdthoughts,

This is nice and peaceful.  Thank heavens for Godchildren, I have a bunch of them.

By the way, I almost killed my Brother-in-law for doing that to my wife.  The Brother-in-law and I got over it though.  He died a long time ago.  We were always good friends, and I still miss the guy.

Your poem brought back memories.

Love Bobby

Life is so fragile and fleeting, the losses so hard to bear. You've expressed it beautifully, Maureen. (((HUGS)))

You stripped it down to the core. This write is beautiful because it is full of love.

M - Life is sometimes so hard to bear but then there is the love (and the pat) to stay with you always.  My heart goes out to you and yours!

Thank you for "taking the time" to respond.

This is all so sudden and David, my
Brother-in-law, was taken to the hospital the next day as they try to decide the best way to ease his breathing, possibly a tracheotomy in a day or two.

All we want is for him to be able to breathe easier, no matter the time that is left.

Thanks again,
M
