colours of patriotism fly at half mast respect for dead, remembrance by living a bugler blows last post and silence old men shuffle by, bodies bent heads proud subtle scents of rosemary, released by bruising, waft up reverence fills morning air seeps into crevices made by children too young to understand but willing to learn costs of war, price of liberty – but who remembers savage fighting by dark skinned people who knew already we can never own the land no matter how much blood is spilled under a rising sun.
