The Astronaut

High upon the pink hilltops, one breeze above the red treetops,
stars punctured night sprinkling clouds with purple hue
which caused the falling gold moonbeams
to filter down in almond streams
and flame my eyes with beauty of this alien planet’s view.

There I was transfixed by majesty without conflict,
enrapt by a silence throbbing soundless at my ears,
whose symphony made the colors thunder
across my eyes and wake from slumber
the Awe that senses flood to wonder….. what Architect worked here!

Dawn gaped a yawning rippling pecan light thru morning.
My landcraft was approaching with a rumble and a roar.
Overhead, it passed a tree
turned and landed close to me.
As I stepped inside, the capsule shut closed and sealed its door.

Up! Up! It whisked me. Ground fell from my feet,
passing clouds that hovered in the upper atmosphere
which stood as guard and sentry
‘gainst all outlaw cosmic entry.
Then I walked the capsule’s gantry to my starship’s pilot chair.

Automatic did the buckles strap my chest and legs and knuckles.
Jaws tensed, preparing for an up and coming jolt
in a silence made long lasting
‘til I felt the rocket blasting
then I closed my eyes and took one breath, just before the bolt.

Straight to lightning warp-speed, thrown back in my seat,
control and throttle gauges blinked their lights upon my berth.
Unzipped did I my flight suit.
Unlatched my helmet’s visor too
to read what was my next stop…Yes! That planet they call Earth.
Are they civilized…………..……..yet?

Loved the first stanza.

And yes....some of us are civilized.

Welcome to earth and make sure you land in the right place. It can be much worse than other planets. Still evolving Namyh.

Very captivating, dear Namyh.

Oh, down here on this wonderful blue planet there is still some work to do to be able to preserve the gifts received and to say that we are an evolved species.

Enjoyed!

Love,
Margherita

Enjoyed your poem, Namyh.  To answer your question, the animals always have been, but, as for the humans, well, er . . .

criticalmass – You are correct! Some of us are civilized but it’s the uncivilized others who harbor and act on fears which counteract being civilized and which have brought us several times to the brink of extinction. An alien visitor might say “I’ve heard of you guys from other travelers. I knew I should have made a right-hand turn at Saturn.” Thanks CM for your enjoyment. Namyh

PrasadN -I know! I know! Just when you thought it was safe to visit other planets. This piece comes along to upset the apple cart and imply that maybe nobody really wants to come and visit us. After all, we have been known to kill presidents, crucify Gods and sons of Gods, blow each other up and enslave one another. With that rep, what would we do with a visitor who must face such primitve fears.  Our Potential? Limitless. Evolving? Absolutely. Civilized ? Not a chance. Namyh

Margherita – You are 100% correct about there being work yet to do on this wonderful blue planet. But look at it in this light. We Earth inhabitants have had 7 million years of evolution, 2 million years as thinking beings, 20,000 years of chaotic civilization, 200 years for most modern day inventions and from 7 million years ago ‘til now, 20 different species of human beings have died except one.............us ! We better learn to love what gifts we have or we’ll never know how to preserve them before they’re lost. Glad you enjoyed the ride Margherita.  Namyh

Owl – Animals are hardwired by Instinct over which they have no control. Birds must fly south for the winter and squirrels must gather nuts. We humans are the only species that can go against our natural Instincts and wreak havoc on all living life. Very perceptive of you Owl to say animals always have been “civilized”. As for us? Well, ummmmmm. …….Forgetta ‘bout it. So glad you enjoyed Owl. Namyh

Namyh, although I agree with you about some of what you said, and I understand the point you were making about animal instinct, I must just say that I have known of many animals who have actually gone against their instincts to perform altruistic acts of love to a completely different species of animals and to humans.
