The Sad Parade Spanish Harlem rose no one knows where it goes when it's gone tonight when the lights flash on I'll be singing my freedom songs in the dark coffee houses downtown my heart will explode with melodious sounds a wonder in my wandering for the bells that ring in this 24-hour city, my heart is beating in such ferocity that I don't know when to stop I feel the night's pressure drop then I go back for more more than I ever needed before A solitary soul drifter am I watching all the balloons fade into the sky spike the sun like an olive on the steeple watching all the happy people waving in slo-mo and I wonder how far this can go watering feelings to grow and blossom in somebody's eyes and someday's dreams to realize the shape I'm in the strength within to change it all in the blink of an eye rearrange all the wondering why drift on by, boy, you've got it made in the sad parade Soft crimson night nobody speaks, they just sigh when the moon dies tonight as the subway cries crashing into Coltrane noise pinks and blues, girls and boys hidden hues, a scattering dream wakes me to fall into a scream I need the freedom of evening I love the kingdom of deep meaning hidden inside the lies I find down on the street where the air chokes the curves of girls so sweet so young, ever so not to be with me and so the sad parade proceeds Spanish Harlem rose I'll chase it wherever it goes til the dawn discovers the city moving on from the dreams it dreamt the night before the words we meant now closing the door on the deep summer shade just a block up from that crumbling masquerade drifting by, boys like I, we've got it made in the sad parade "Alone: that ain't the word, it's just a groan in the morning nobody ever heard" --Justin Currie, 'Gold Dust' |
