We rented a room in a stretched hotel of Salt Lake City. We settled down and we heard shouts In the next room. people were messing around and quarrelling. what could we do? To wait that they fall asleep and do not disturb them. We were worried. The night passed. The next day we discovered the Temple, State street, the statue of the angel Moroni. Mormons spoke to us, is it true that they possess several souls ? We leave northward. Salt Lake City did not convert us. |

Hope you enjoyed the Great Salt Lake and all the beautiful natural rock formations. I stayed a few months in Utah, it didn't convert me either even though I had a great uncle who was Mormon. |

Yann, sorry I missed you when you were here. There is so much more here to see than just downtown Salt Lake City. Hope you get a chance to see southern Utah on your worldly travels, Now that's Gods country. More National parks and monuments than any other state I can think of. Fabulous mountains and scenery. Hope you are going to Yellowstone if you are going north. Enjoy. Travel safely. Tracey. |

dear Tracey you are so kind, yes I travelles north and saw the magnificence of yellow stone, I saw the salt lake and will write a next poem about....It is so natural to call Utah a gods country considering the number of beauties (with Arizona and all trhe magnificent West) -that stand there...I did this wonderful journey in 1995 and I have only one regret, not knowing the people I could have met if I had written poetry at that time... However I have a deep wish, to see one more time this wonderful region, may be in a few years, rent a RV and do the road...I like Utah and the beautiful region of SLC, I will surely recommend this trip. regards yann |

mormons.....lol, they are different, your peom was good, it reminds me of when you dont want to answer the door when those jahova witness come around your neighbor hood and you look out the window and hope they dont knock on your door....not trying to be mean, im catholic and im staying that way... anyways i like your poem. ^_^ |

This was a nice slice of your travel adventure, dear Yann. Several souls? That's interesting. Must ask my Mormon friend about it. She is a wonderful person and lives in a wonderful place in Utah, as I have seen on pictures. Helo Killereagle, In france too siometimes we are visited in our houses (once or twice a year), I am polite and don't close my door but sometimes it is boring, I believe in God but don't like somebody tells me how and when. thank you for your comment. yann |

Having been born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) And reared in the Salt Lake Vally, I can assure you that there is more to Utah than what you may have observed. Thirteen (13) million (mormons) wish you the best. Come again. Billie C. |

Dear Yann, Enjoyed this. If you pass through LA, give me a call. They don't have to try to convert you, they have something called Baptism for the dead, so they can make the choice for you, later on. Yann, my wife and I had a similar situation when we stayed in Saltlake City. The management called the police twice in the one night. It added to the excitement but my wife was very happy when daylight came and we hadn't been attacked or interfeared with in any way. Otherwise we had a very enjoyable time there. Take care my friend. Just to set the record strait, Bobby, you can not swim in the Great Salt Lake. It is 28% Salt, you can flout but, you can not swim. Please don't try. You would strangle. Billie C |

Sounds like a bit of a disturbing visit. However, I like how you've penned this. If they have several souls some of the men will have to get bigger houses because they have several wives. He he there's been some bad stuff come out about that lately, especially when it comes to the kids. But historically The Mountain Meadows massacre was a mass slaughter of the Fancher-Baker emigrant wagon train at Mountain Meadows, Utah Territory, by the local Mormon militia on 11 September 1857. It began as an attack, quickly turned into a siege, and eventually culminated in the execution of the unarmed emigrants after their surrender. All of the party except for seventeen children under eight years old—about 120 men, women, and children—were killed. After the massacre, the corpses of the victims were left decomposing for two years on the open plain, their children were distributed to local Mormon families, and many of their possessions auctioned off at the LDS Cedar City tithing office. These people returned evil for evil and it was very wrong but then I always say that when it comes to the way the white man treated the North American Indian. Great poem. Eric |

Thank you Ethome for the very informative and historical comment, I appreciate very much this kind of stuff when it is in Live on a web site...I am rather sad things happened this way and feel sorry too, french did horrible things too during wars and sometimes people have to struggle for life...As you say, europeans did a lot of wrong to indians...Thanks for the helpful comment. regards yann |

Just for a little more clarification, The LDS Church, (Mormon) Does not practice Poligamy. The people that do, are not members of the Church. They are members of their own religion that does not follow the laws of the land. The LDS Church does believe in the law of the land, they did practice poligamy over 100 years ago, but when the Law changed, so did the church doctrine. It is also interesting to remember, that in a country that was created on the beliefs of Fredom of religion, The mormons were persicuted and driven out of their homes, and their leaders were murdered. A lot has changed in 175 years. However, isn't it interesting that people still think they are poligamists. It's also interesting that there are 10 times more Mormons outside Utah, than the whole population of Utah. |

Tracey Please realize that I was just trying to be funny not meaning any harm. I realize that the modern day Latter Day Saints don't practise polygamy. The media is full of stories of the practises of the offshoots of the religion. I realize that there was a certain amount persecution involved in the 1800's that's why I used the term evil for evil which I realize they also no longer practise today. You're right a lot has changed in 175 years. My apologies. Eric |

It makes me wonder, if you stayed the night in a motal in Passaic, New Jersy or Madison, Wisconsin and your neighbors acted badly would you still write a poem about it, or was it just because it was in Salt Lake City? Billie You're not a moderator here and my post wasn't directed toward you. I wasn't spreading any gossip nor did I have my facts misconstrued. If you feel the need to be self serving and important then wait til I direct some comment toward something you've posted. In the meantime take it up with Balladeer or one of the other moderators here if you have some personal gripe. Yann was just telling the story as it came to him. There's no need for derisively mocking him for his right to express himself in poetic fashion. Being caustic and sardonic with ill intentioned motives is hardly carte blanche for you to be recognized as the grand poopah of moderation around here. This is what Bobby was refering to "Swimming and sunbathing are popular on the clean, white sand beaches at Antelope Island State Park. The salinity of the water averages about 12%, making it much saltier than the ocean. The water is so buoyant that people can easily float. Freshwater showers are available to rinse off after swimming." A state advertisement. Hello Billie and Ethome, I just told a story without intentions of generalizing, same things happen too in other cities as NY and San Francisco, It was just a bad memory, a coincidence that it happened in SLC...I enjoyed the visit of SLC as I did from all other cities of USA. I remember hearing a man in an adjacent apartment to the one where my mother, brother, and I lived. He was raging, breaking things, profane....my heart quailed within me. I was 10, and I stayed as far away from him as I could. My mother asked me one day what I thought of him. I could only tell her, "Mama, he's not a nice man." She married him. Some incidents leave vivid unspoken prayers, when the only creed that matters is soul sustaining you from within.....you really touched me with this poem. |
