Belated April 1 The old folk liked to play the game of April fools, sometimes considering there were so many; sometimes because all the fun it could behold, but sometimes the guests weren’t even intended. So it told on certain faces. Personally, and without good reason I do not play pranks. I pee when they are played on me like a pup, unexpectedly. And I can’t inhibit that to old age, either. But I would have loved the moment when the ne’er do well who insisted he was a guest at my father’s mother’s home came by for every Sunday’s breakfast. Grandmother must have been very tired of feeding this extraordinarily grand face; she did it for so long. And pancakes in South Dakota were the main great meal of a special breakfast. Dad said, “Holidays, Sundays, Mom would fix them, just like this.” And he did…and I watched as he added all the ingredients for a special meal; but his family was of 12 children, so he had learned and I leaned on the thinness of the batter and never knew a flat fat flapjack… I just knew the crepe variety…. Thin, thin they were, and thin they are even today…but I’ve missed the story! Grandma Rilling, with her hillbilly ghost of a stranger, he felt there was always a meal with grandma Rilling; so he kinda snuck in on that day, and wheedled in as he may, and stuck by his course of being remorse o’er things that hadn’t gone his way. But grandma she grinned, for she had planned away, the beginning and ending of this ol’ beggar’s way; she had circled in brown paper wrapping just the night before the antithesis of a man’s ever-more in hindsight and foresight and never again, the kin to a pain that would pass but remain and between his flapjacks she impaled a circle of brown paper … and he couldn’t believe his thick plate so lush, he almost blushed; though he soon discovered his caper had been disclosed, his ownership of friendly has been uncovered… He quickly ran through the doorway; Paper sacks his floor-way. © krj 4-1-09 |

Well, done, Grandma Rilling! He certainly got his come-uppance! Much enjoyed, Karilea. I love April Fool's Day, but didn't realise that it was the whole of yesterday until this morning. Revelled in the idea I came up with today which I would have liked to use to catch out my son yesterday, but won't tell him, as I intend to keep it for next year, instead. Owl |

Yo dear Sunshine, Now you've gone and made me hungry for pancakes. They are my youngest son's specilty. He's the pancake king. His mother taught him how to make them. Love Bobby |

Sunshine, how can one not love a poem when the poet admits to peeing like a puppy. Huh? I love this - and am not a big pancake fan because my Mom made them too fat and undercooked them. Nothing like doughy pancakes to make a girl give up starch! Love, A |

Diana, I think my grandmother Rilling must have been a very special woman - I wish I had known her, I only know her presence in her smile of a photo...I think we would have gotten along quite well... serenity gal, I'm not gone, just rearranging my lemons with the change of fortunes, and yes, there'll be a new poem coming soon. I'm working on it now. Hard to admit that it takes weeks to form a poem now, especially when there use to be more than three a day! So very glad you like that particular line! So very not LIKE me.... Thank you, Robert. My father taught me the crepe variety.... Alison, love you, gal, for bringing this back to the top. I dislike thick pancakes, but as the story emotes, the thin ones are the real winners. Thank you, sweetie! |

Sunshine, Lol, I can certainly relate to this. My mother, one April fools', did almost the same thing, only it was waffles with strips of cloth sheets in them. My father , trying to be polite, didn't want to say anything at first about how tough they were ! Good telling. Doc |

Dear Karilea that is quite an interesting story. What a wonderful old lady your grandma must have been. Thanks for sharing. Love to you my friend. Lindsay |
