Friday evening invites a zoo of…

blood-faced talkative winos,
slobbering staggering inebriates,

heavy-coughing bow-legged rebels
dirty leather jackets, sweaty bandanas
the stench of stale cigar smoke.

wrinkled scraggly haired women,
forgotten from youth’s seduction
faded beauty with elegant experience.

naive children roaring with
twisted verbatim from textbooks
to anyone who will listen.

robotic waitresses with green shirts,
low-hipped pants, plastic earrings,
dirty aprons and a flash of buttons.

Fools yelping autobiographies
and spraying foamy saliva
from across stained tavern walls.

Clumsy lovers dancing
to drown out gibberish
emitting from mute jukeboxes.

Garlic and cheap beer odor
suffocating nearby nostrils
from incoherent voice boxes

Black bar stools indented
in warmth from overweight
rumps and sticky alcohol

Dim lit lamps defining
pock-marked faces
and dirty cocktail napkins

Racks of sinister juice
burning down throats
to dull the scene.

Televisions flashing Muhammad Ali
Judo-clinching George Foreman
on red, white, and blue velvet ropes.

The cramped illumination
separates young and old.
Each unaware of the other generation
strangers in familiar clothing.

Yo Newpoet,

You've pegged it exactly.  Those days are now buried in my past.  I remeber them fondly.

This is excellent work.

Makes me happy I have never enjoyed the bar scene.

Paint a nice picture...I'm still at the ripe age of going to the bars...but they do get old and I understand your pain, believe that.

Well done.
