Lately so many deceased have come to the present tense
he fumbles to separate times often.
She smiles at him in the way she used to in past.
The afternoon is slanting on the path,
he feels he cannot say a word to her without a blush.
She does nothing but smile, forgiving, benign.
He takes the knife, the insertion, the wound, the pain, the shame…

Past always comes alive with naked guilt
in black and white, easy to point out the wrong turn, twist.
How are y o u …. The simple word seems blank.
“Do you remember our village? The slender brook?”
He remembers. It is not difficult.
Difficult are the promises. Difficult is love.

The most difficult thing is her face,
as if she is the planet earth, placid in acceptance.

Of course he cannot imagine
how painfully she is keeping
a straight face, an unperturbed one.
