I know the subject matter seems a little maudlin, but this poem is actually about change and moving to different areas in my life.

His Goodbye

It rained the day he said goodbye,
Perhaps if the sun had shone they would have seen.
Looked into his eyes and seen the failing embers
of his final cry for help.
But fateful clouds had them scurry past,
Faces shrouded by coats
And downcast eyes holding each in selfish solitude.

It was rush hour when he said goodbye.
And behind the screens of a hundred cars,
Overworked faces of those just wishing for home
failed to see the man on the bridge.
His coat clinging limply to his frame
As he looked for answers,
Yet the blind drove on.

She wasn't at home when he said goodbye,
Punching in the daily numbers
On a phone he would no longer use.
Needing to hear the song of her voice,
Even though he had cast it aside,
For a cheap night in a room with no view.
Her band now held within his fist.

They didn't have time when he said goodbye,
And he wonders how he lost them
In a haze of board meetings and late nights.
Watching them sleep, grasping the pictures
of a life they longed to lead,
The crayon false smile
Of a father who was never there.

He was alone when he said goodbye,
When he took his final parabolic fall
With a lifetime of stagnant regrets.
The rain cried empty tears
Washing away his broken guilt.
And on the bridge above,
The people hurried home.

Regrets can be so overhwelming,  a very sad emotional state of mind.

You write a sad tale, and you wrote it well.

Your poem evoked strong emotions in me as I read along ~ all the way to the tragic ending...
