I dreamt I was still double strapped and earning money, leather wrapped with cash paid honeys waiting in the wings, it was the moon I think or just a howling wind, or maybe all the drink I'd had before walking into night, a thin last night a night of wishes, wishes for oblivion, I'd yet to learn the premium on death back then; in quiet times when nightmares rest I know we were the best our generation had to give to live or die was not a thought that troubled me back then I was nineteen and old, to walk with open eyes no thought of cost into jaws of fire meant I'd already given up my life for lost, yet I brought it home, if this is home, the price of those wars still demands its monthly due while you and I, if you're still alive, lean numb against a tide of lies dished up by politicians and their entourage in words made dizzy from the spin driven by a motley crew of hangers on, served daily while I watch my bloodied hands aging as they stretch to turn themselves to other wishful dreams. ©2009 by icebox . |

The raw intensity of this aches. Some will never fathom the forever price you paid. |

A magnificent "song of yourself" that resonates as a song for the many. I truly appreciate this poem. art |

Oh, Charlie, your voice is so powerful. I hope that this poem, as well as others you have written before, will reach those hearts of stone who have never allowed themselves to see beyond the surface and to acknowledge the weight of emotions of those who have met and traveled through hell right here on Earth. Not to forget! Outstanding write. Love and warm hugs. Margherita |

"I (He) was nineteen and old, to walk with open eyes no thought of cost into jaws of fire meant I'd (He'd)already given up my(His) life for lost, yet I (He)brought it home, if this is home, the price of those wars still demands its monthly due while you(He) and I," paying the price even now, in delayed reaction...as have many. Understanding the full cost yet never knowing the actual feel having not been in the field myself. M |

Is everyone so brave at nineteen? I dunno...but surviving the memories is worthy of recognition. |
