(I have no idea of the author to this piece, but found it has a very good message behind it) THE OLD MAN AND THE COWBOY I was working in Nevada, in a dusty old saloon. There were only a couple of patrons on that lazy afternoon. One was a quiet old gentle man who looked full of sadness and pain, the other a middle-aged Cowboy who did nothing but cuss and complain. "My wife she is stupid and lazy. he said, She don't even know how to think. She can't cook a meal that's fit for a man. She's driving me to drink." "She's gained thirty pounds since we married. She don't even care how she looks. She spends all her spare time reclining, just reading those damn romance books." "We only make Love on the weekends," he complained as he sipped on his beers. Then the old man got up, and he spoke up and said, "My wife has been dead for ten years." "She wasn't no beauty queen neither. She wasn't so trim or so lean, but that never seemed to bother me much cause she always kept herself clean. Her cooking left a lot to desire. Sometimes her meals were crude, but the Love that went into those pots and those pans made up for the taste of the food. She never did dress like a lady, but her clothes weren't important to me. It's what's on the inside that matters so much as to what kind of person you'll be. "Your sex life's none of my business" he said, "but you complain about once a week? Try roaming from town to town for ten years without so much as a touch on the cheek." "No, my wife could've looked better. She didn't have much class or charm, but I'd give every drop of booze in this bar just to hold her again in my arms. It's what's on the inside that matters, that makes a person ugly or cute. Not the color of dress that a woman wears or the cut of a mans three piece suit." The old man then finished his bottle. Then he coughed and he spat on the floor. He said "Thanks for the liquid refreshment." Then silently walked out the door. We watched the old man through the window as he walked down the street all alone, Then the Cowboy approached me with tears in his eyes and ask me if I had a phone. He dialed the number with trembling hands and said "I'm here at the local saloon. I just wanted to call you and tell you I Love you and Darling...I'll be home soon." ------------------ This is courage...to bear unflinchingly what heaven sends. ~Eurpides |
