that is a difficult question and one has to define what exactly you are asking before an accurate answer could be offered, but in general..

that which deals with subject matter that elicits the effect of creating sexual tension or directly refers to and or is about things sexual for the purpose of stimulation...

how's that for an effort at being clinical?

Erotica is in the eye of the beholder. Jamie thinks it's one step down from porn. I disagree. I think it's SEVERAL steps down.

Erotica is porn that is written with effort. Erotica seeks to arouse through intricate description of setting and mood, rather than subject matter...

I'd have to say that erotica is anything that can be sexually enticing to read, without being sexually explicit.

How come porn always gets a bad rap, it is a valid art form enjoyed by sad lonely pol such as myself.. anyway... erotica...

It is as SHaron and Jamie pointed out subjective.

Some people find leather or lace erotic, though it is not the fabric itself that is erotic, it's the thought of the person in them.

Nudity in itself is not erotic, having done life drawing for 5 yrs in college I know its not. Erotica is in what is suggested, sometimes less is more.

I believe erotica is to do with a number of factors...
maybe enviroment, clothes, the vital stats of a person, their attitude, the amount of alcohol comsumed before you have these thoughts lol.

I think Brian hit it on the nose: Erotic is suggestive. Pornographic is explicit. Sounds about right to me. (and I agree, Brian, I think it gets a bad rap!)
