Subject: my brother Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 22:29:37 -0500 (EST) From: [email protected] (Nancy Gibbs) Hi Ron, I love your site. My older brother is dying of Aids. He has 10 years clean and sober, he's only 50. He put the "magic" in my Christmases, and I'd lke to find a poem that I could give to him that would really touch him--before he passes. So many wait until their loved one is gone. I love my brother, he is my closest sibling, and I already know it's going to be way to hard. He is so special. As kids, he was alway playing practical jokes, but was always there to protect me. The thing he misses the most is running marathons--and getting trophies! And riding his Brand new Harley. He has a few good friends who still take himto his FAVORITE games (live) in Philly--the Eagles!!!!! Can you help me find a special poem for him that I can frame for his Christmas gift? Thank-you so much! ~Nancy Nancy, I so sorry. I wish I could think of something truly special for you, but I'm afraid nothing comes to mind at all. There's quite a few good poems in our Family section (under the Life category), and some of them are close. But nothing that would be perfect. Can I perhaps make a different suggestion? Our forums have some incredibly marvelous people who might be able to help. If two heads are better than one, then several hundred should be better still. A lot of great poets, and very compassionate people. If they can't find a poem, I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote one for you. Good luck, and God Bless. Ron Dear Ron, Could you post it for me--you have my permission. I'djust like to add a few things, his name is Donald, and we grew up on a large dairy farm by the susquahanna river in PA--never a dull moment..Dad wanted Don to take over the farm, his dream was to be a truck-driver--and that he is! He is still working--although it's very very hard for him. He loves life so much, and feels that if he quits, he dies. I can still see him skipping stones, climbing to the top of the silo, and scaring everyone. I tried to post this--I'm just to burned out--thank-you for any help from your site--it will be appreciatedmore then you'll ever know. ~Nancy |

I'll be sending Nan a poem I did for my brother, who has been diagnosed with emphysema at age 48. Thanks, Ron, for putting this up. |

I have read many fine eulogy and tribute poems, but none come to mind that would incorporate the personal aspects of Donald's life as I know them from this poignant request. But I am inspired by the request, and will work on one to submit for consideration. My heart goes out to this family and their friends. |

I'll forward this one to her for consideration... I can feel the big rig's heartbeat Through vibrations 'neath my feet As the sweat pours down my forehead From the Pennsylvania heat. I can feel her soul inside me As I leave the miles behind And I daydream of the memories That lie buried in my mind. I drive past the dairy farms there Where the Susquahanna be See my father tending cattle With the small boy that was me. He had hoped that I would follow In his footsteps when I grew But the big rig magic lured me Down another avenue. I drive past the sweaty faces Of some schoolboys running track Feel my smile grow wide and blossom At the memories they bring back Of the days my legs were flying Down the summer countryside And the medals that I gathered Which I always wore with pride. You see, my job of driving big rigs Is just like life in many ways. One never knows where roads may lead to Or where a hidden pothole lays. We simply keep foot on the pedal And do our best to stay on course. We trust in God to handle roadblocks Depending on a Higher source. I'm going to keep this big rig running. I'll keep the pedal to the floor. I've many coutrysides to visit And many roads yet to explore. I'll keep my eyes on the horizon To keep on trucking is my fate My rig and I don't plan to slow down Till we arrive at Heaven's gate. P.S. As one small final thought, I'll tell you With hopes to raise a little smile I'll live until the Eagles win one (and that may be for quite a while!) Well Nancy, I am afraid I am not quite good enough yet to help you out but you sure came to the right place to get the support you need and the people to get the job done! May I offer my prayers to you instead, as that is all I have to give that would compare with the work of the poets that will be sending you poetry. I too lost my best friend this year and ran the final mile with her, so stay strong he will be needing you. So, I am just sending my love and prayers. God Bless. |

I was SURE I had one--but it's so filled with personal details that instead of re-working it, I'll try a new one. My heart is with you and your family friend! Thanks for passing this on, Ron. |

Nancy I read what you wrote. Frankly it touched my heart. I think your own words of being truthful of how you feel would be the best words of all, simply because they would come from you and be sincere. |
