I'm just curious if there are other writers out there, not just writing poetry, that have found themselves having a difficult time focusing on their other writing because of poetry? Wow, that was a run on sentance (sorry nan!) Anyway, I realized the other day, that I was starting to write my prose to a rythm. I had to force myself to stop thinking that way, and re-focus on my style... Just curious! ------------------ ...the things I did not know at first, I learned by doing twice. -Billy Joel |

I notice the same thing, but I find it useful - prose needs rhythm, too. |

I do find it somewhat difficult to move from one to another..I write long stories (novel size, actually), and its hard to go from that to poetry, especially when both are pulling me. It's very hard for me to write prose with actual sentences! I speak in poetic form a lot too...can do it for 15 minutes at time by concentrating and thinking 4 lines ahead of myself. Check out the prose section once in awhile....read something in prose before you write yours...gets the gears shifted. |

I appreciate the suggestion Ms deVine, but I'm afraid that would be even worse. I am an incredibly avid reader, mostly sci/fi-fantasy. I prefer long(upwards of 600-800pgs)novels, which I consume at a rate of about four or so a week. My problem is, if I'm writing sci-fi, I absolutely cannot read sci-fi. Likewise with fantasy. I find myself enmeshing the characters and style of the book I'm reading, which I absolutely DO NOT want to do! Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha, how droll...  I must say tho, I am one of my least favorite authors. It's similar to the way I feel in here. Amongst such a wealth of talent, I am like a grain of sand being thrown into the sea. But to answer your question: Stephen R. Donaldson is by far my all-time favorite author. He goes into such psychological depth with his characters, that not only do you know them as if they existed, you also feel and share their fears, happiness and guilt.He has written both sci-fi and fantasy, though he has only a total of 11 actual novels. Steven Brust is probably my favorite for "lighter" fantasy, though Douglas Adams comes in at a close second. Strangely enough, L. Ron Hubbard is one of my favorite "sci" authors. He has a wonderful ability to "simply" build a believable story. And recently, I have discovered Terry Goodkind. I think that he shows a lot of promise, though with his last book, I must admit that I think he is wearing out his current series. These are not by far all of the authors that I enjoy. In reality, I could keep typing out names, telling you why each of them is one of my favorites! ------------------ Sanity is the playground for the unimaginative.
