I think that rhyming poems are real good. They sound nice, but it seems like there's limits to the wording. Free-writing doesn't sound as... COOL as rhyme, but it gives the writer more freedom to express themselves. What do you think? |

It's an age old discussion, the relative merits of free-writing and rhyme. I find that my preference depends very much on my mood at any one time, and also the mood evoked by the words. Even within free writing, I always strive to maintain a rhythm which has as much to do with the poem's meaning as the words themselves. Whereas rhyme is technically more challenging, having to fit into more rules, I often find that it gives an unsuitable, child-like feeling to my work. It is very hard to work in rhyme and avoid slipping into a dum-de-dum rhythm. Frequent breaks in the poem help, and can make a balance, but on the whole, I'm a free writing person. |
