I don't think I agree.   Personalized searches don't censor anything, they just allow for your preferred kind of content to be easier to find for you.  If a music site, for example, "recognizes" someone likes rock and pop music based on his/her activity at the site, the pages for the person may show more links to rock and pop albums, videos etc.  It would be harder to find what the person actually likes and is looking for if the pages/searches made sure to mix an equal amount of rap, heavy metal, opera, etc. It wouldn't make sense either though.  If the history of the person's activity at the site shows him/her only buying and looking for pop and rock music, why would you try to make sure an equal amount of rap, heavy metal, opera, etc. links showed up on his/her pages/searches as well?  Personalized searches I think are usually reasonable (based on a person's activity) and allow people to find the kind of content they like much more easily/quickly.

I can agree with that, ess, but searches have nothing to do with his beginning examples of how comments from conservatives had been edited out of his facebook conversations. That was not to facilitate his reading or make his searches easier. That was basically selective censorship on Facebook's part.

Search engines and Facebook filter out stuff you wouldn't read?

Isn't that the fault of the user?  I mean if he actually read one or two of the comments they wouldn't be filtered out in the first place.

It's based on a presumption, though.

I do not want my news filtered, and I do like to consider opposing points of view.

Even with something as benign as musical tastes--I bristle at the idea of someone (even an impersonal someone) deciding for me what I might like...

I can be fickle.

Or?

eclectic

It all depends.

(And had I typed this in an e mail, I guarantee I would have gotten ads for "serenity pads" in my advertisement bar.

I think this is the machine telling us to go with not only our feelings, but also to not be content with just what might pop up. I know in the past I've told people to google something and it should be the "first up"...and this was years ago, and they said, "that didn't come up for me" and then I would feed them the link. I do agree that it is based on a "gathering of sources" but I also think I'm still likely to change my mind.

So I do give some very specific words for google, and I will continue to play with it surely as much as it plays with me.

Catch as catch can!

Hey, peoples! I've missed you!
