I cannot believe she is gone. Spyder gal. ![]() Not-quite-two, she was a sweet, rambunctious, independent Lipizzaner filly who wouldn't stay by her mom's side. Even when she was barely three months old, she would wander off on her own little side-trips, and was curious about everything that was on the other side of the fence. Two(?) nights ago, she jumped a fence, possibly to explore whatever was on the other side...but it wasn't a clean jump. One of her beautiful strong but slender legs apparently didn't clear the top. No one saw it happen, but she must have caught a hoof on the top, and flipped over the fence. She broke her back. Spyder was the young filly my daughter and I helped bring into this world, not quite two years ago. It was the first live foal birthing either of us had attended, and when she didn't begin to nurse within the usual time frame, we had to work our butts off to get her through the first 48 hours safely. My daughter handles this kind of loss far better than many. Having been around animals most of her life, she has seen the life/death scenario played out many times. She accepts that this is part and parcel of being a breeder/trainer. But it's still a huge heartache. RIP, little Spyder. I shall never ever forget you. It is so sad. She didn't belong to us, but I felt pretty attached to her after seeing her come out of that birthing sack. sigh, she was such a free-spirited filly! |

Awwww Kacy, how tragic. I always wanted a horse of my own - they have to be the most beautiful animals on earth. Rest in peace passionate Spyder. hugs, Chris |

thanks, chris I'm sorry to be such a sap about this but I have spyder's photo on my desktop and when I turned on the PC tonight, I started crying. Spyder was the nickname she got when she was just a week old, for her long leggy look. Her owners renamed her when she moved to their barn. To me, she will always be our little Spyder. |

Dang, Kacy, I am sorry, I always wondered why I wrote this or what attaction I have always had to horses, but this is a repost - you know she is running free, has to be: Leaping like a winner a purebred beauty wonder She races against time Knowing not why only that it feels Oh - so good to be alive! The wild wind invades her lungs like a long lost love accelerating to the sound of the sight of the ecstasy of flight Midnight mane flowing disguising wild staring eyes she cries aloud defying nature the stars the sky And with the maelstrom beating in tune with the intensity of the pounding within her chest She submits at last to freedom ![]() |

Helping in the birthing certainly would make you feel a part of this young one. I'm sorry for your loss. We had 2 horses when I was a kid. MY brother rode a lot, but I was afraid of them for some reason, so was never anxious to ride. He'd talk me into riding one every now and then, but I really never enjoyed it like he did. God bless, Rae |
