Beaten up and beaten down,
crushed by forces of nature
then cast about, flotsom and jetsom.
So many, no longer around,
to view all the finger pointing,
like a crude bad finger painting
some first grader inflicted
on the teacher’s blackboard.
But few, if any are caught
rolling up their sleeves,
stepping into the scene to clean up.
And isn’t it amazing
how many Monday morning
quarterbacks play the field
of the political ballgame,
posturing themselves
on fields of good intentions,
bantying about like Chickens Little
unwilling or unable to see
we can only cover our heads
if we stick together, identify needs
and possible solutions,
then....stick together to rebuild.

Apparently, not even your favorite version God
had the power to stop the devastation
we now know as Katrina.
And God, how the very sound
of that name pains my ears.

~Katrina~Katrina~Katrina~
you were that small fragile child
whose funeral I attended years ago
after you rode your bike so carelessly
into the road, encountering a force
much bigger than yourself.

There is ample blame on many sides
How many sides are there, in reality?
No one can stop a hurricane.
Many could have and should have
been better prepared, quicker to the scene.
(But is it really being mean, to point fingers
when some bodies are still buried or afloat?)
It’s a hell of a lot easier
to point fingers from a distance
than to put on the gloves,
wade through the muck, the stench.
New Orleans shall reek for many moons.

For those who live within the range of view,
who walk the streets and reap the rewards
of what government seems unable to do...
I heave a sigh in harmony, offer my shoulder,
and a rarity from me these days...a prayer.

"Oh my God, unite the hearts of thy servants.
Help them, Oh God, in their endeavors."

Prayers are not a rarity here.

I chant and rant more often than I pray.
Yet each day, I chant a healing 'prayer' for you, sister K.
