The Glass of Air that Separates In the room I roamed with ear pressed against the glass of air that separated my table from theirs. Lost to my companion, consumed by a conversation from behind, words with no faces. A toast to beginnings and endings, what do you say? I heard. Out with the old, in with the new. To beginnings and endings, and to truth, no matter what. I looked up to the clear eyed watch of my companion, who understood the nature of my listening. A toast, I thought, a brown table, a glass, the napkin with a wet circle. How many things are permanent? The circle, a symbol of continuity and continuation, yet, this circle will be gone soon, dried up and thrown away, carted off and dumped into a landfill and forever changed. Are we in life, like the napkin, imprinted, used and thrown away? He touched the circle on my finger, the symbol of our love, he touched it with his own. Uncertain of direction I listened still. I toast to truth and just straight lines, I heard. I looked down at our hands now interlocked warm on warm and raised my glass. To circles, I said. ---------- a poem written from a scene in a piece of fiction I am writing. [This message has been edited by Martie (03-22-2004 12:12 PM).] |

Ahh...indeed. Circles. Everything is coming to me in such a timely way...it does not surprise me, nor should it, that you would be one of them to bring me even more proof. To circles! |

Martie, I was stunned when I read this from you, but taken but it at the same time. Then, you did it. You resolved this with a happy ending. At that that, I thought, "Yep, that's Martie!" I enjoyed this very much, and would also like to read the piece of fiction! Sadie |

A beautifully written poignant piece, Martie. Very well done. I'm sure I've told you before that I envy your mind? I do, I do. |

I think we would be somewhat surprised at what the circle encompasses but until then, here's to your poetry and fiction writing. Good luck! |

I think the fiction you are writing will be truly special to judge from this scene, so masterfully written. Love, Margherita |

To circles indeed.... smiling at you Martie. This is indeed masterfully written. M Beauty of the world which is soon to perish has two edges, one of laughter and one of anguish, cutting the heart asunder. |

Beautiful title... opening the door to an incredible write! *S* And knowing your talent, the whole will be every bit as incredible as this scene. *S* |

"a poem written from a scene in a piece of fiction I am writing." Yes, perhaps....but there is much more than fiction in this. Much, much more. I'm glad I looked back in here, in time to find this beauty. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

Thank you good people for your wonderful replies. And, I admit...not totally fiction...the fiction that I write comes from my heart, and things I've experienced...therefore from truth. Also, I am a listener at restaurants......I tell my husband that I'm gathering information for my book. |
