'Twas fall of sixteen-twenty-one and crops had thrived that year,
The pilgrims and the natives thought they’d all enjoy a feast.
They toiled in preparation, all those folks from far and near
Before the winter snows set in, they joined in autumn fest.

There was a Turkey, named Sir Tom when given his invite,
Was told he should come dressed to kill – He’d be the honored guest.
Tom Turkey was the plumpest bird, so pilgrims set their sites.
Tom proudly primped his motley plumes and donned his festive best.

But Tom emerging from the woods at Massachusetts Bay
Was met by pilgrims’ shotguns hunting turkey on detail.
Tom Turkey turned and fled back to the forest in a fray...
He ran and ran but still he had John Carver on his tail.

Tom Turkey was the greatest Cape-on of the neighborhood,
He knew that he must then set forth a Great EsCape Cod plan.
Those pilgrims wouldn’t rest until they’d roasted him for food.
To Carver, Tom said, “Stuff it,” and his Turkey Trot began.

Tom hid amongst the cranberries, who camouflaged his plume.
In turn he freed them from their bogs and showed them Ocean’s Spray.
The cranberries were grateful as they’d only known their flume,
For now they could roll with the tides of lovely Cape Cod Bay.

But Tom reminded them that they’d be pilgrim dinner too.
Escape they must lest they be plucked and then they would be sauced.
Lo and Behold, there on the shore stood stately Mayflower Two.
Tom and the berries climbed aboard and portside anchor tossed.

From that day forth this saga’s told Tom’s sailed the seas o’er time.
Thanksgiving pirates to this day, so goes the story’s lore
Out saving turkeys from their fate - The Great Cranberry Crime
Tom Turkey and his friends aren’t ours to Gobble any more.

Waft every crest upon your destined sea
Embrace the Wave of Serendipity
Lest its elusive arcane ecstasy
Refurl with sail for all eternity

Your wit and writ and way of words
seems to me amusingly absurd
but I enjoy each write of you
some day, I'll visit Cape Cod's blue...

Nan,  by chance,  was there a Tuna named
Charlie on that boat too?

Love the story,  par excellence!

Such a wise bird is he,  one of feather who
sails...sails the mighty sea...

Well, you've convinced ME to skip the turkey and cranberries this year (don't like cranberries anyway!).

Wonderful poem, I love it!

Delightful, creative, witty and absolutely FUN!

It sure sounds like some real shenanighans going on up there on the Cape with Tom Turkey and those Cranberries, Nan!

Don't tell them, but I garnered my turkey and cranberries tonight and have safely secured them in a secret undisclosed location (can't have them confiscating my booty!).

Now on a serious note...about the cranberries...when you cook them do you have to use sugar?  I've always followed the recipe on the bag which calls for sugar but now I can't have it. Will it still work if I use Splenda? (I bought a couple of cans of cranberry sauce for everyone else in case I ruin the homemade.) I figured if anyone would know, you would.

Nan,
this was so funny, I almost fell off my chair laughing. You definitely have a runaway with words.

Ya know... I always called my "ex" Tom Turkey...

Thank you all for taking time to visit with some of my silly words.  This one was fun to write for sure...

Um.. I've gotta go buy my turkey now.  Maybe I'll get Thomasina?..

Sure wish I could send this to our tour guide of when we did New England and Cape Cod in '98. Alas I don't know her address.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

'Tis wonderful tale that's truly told.
I'll get a ham; you've got me sold.
But if I feel my hunger fester
A dab of stuffing from you I'd pester.

A very creative story and rhythm.  Thank you. KJ

Nan, I just had to respond. This had me on the floor laughing. You are such a wonder with the words and imagination.

Hmmmm....maybe instead of a turkey, we'll have a bunch of chickens instead!

You have a good one and don't work too hard cookin up all that good stuff to eat.

Hugs, Marti

Hello Nan,

I'm glad to have had the chance to read this.
I do not, often enough, get the chance to read or write, but a friend gave me access for a bit.

Thanks
