Those with poetry at the main site might like to know I just finished updating it with the comments our visitors post when they "vote" for a poem. Not everyone leaves a comment with their vote, of course, but many do. This particular batch includes 11,959 new comments. I also wanted to let everyone know ahead of time that there's going to some updates to our forum software in the next few days. We continue to struggle with new Registrations. Every time I open the doors to new Members, within a day or two our Moderator team is inundated with a little bit more than they can handle and a whole lot more than they should handle. After a lot of discussion about what can be done to improve the process and lighten the load, I almost have the software changes ready. Many of the changes won't affect existing Members, and indeed, will be invisible unless you try to register a new username. New registrants will find themselves pretty much forced to read our rules, and will be warned they are Probationary Members until they have posted their first twenty poems. We hope this will let everyone know that we take our standards around here seriously and expect them to do the same. One of the upcoming changes, however, will apply to everyone, not just new Members. Our existing Guidelines say, "we have avoided making rules about how many poems should be posted by a single author within a given time span." Unfortunately, that's a rule we can no longer avoid making. For years, we have encouraged people to post no more than three a day, and certainly the vast majority of you have always complied. New Members, however, are almost notorious for over-posting during their first few days or weeks with us. They come to us with a lot of poetry already written and ready to share, and many of them tend to get a bit carried away. We understand. We even sympathize. Unfortunately, we just don't have the manpower right now to properly handle a large volume of new poetry every day. We need to space it out a bit, so our Moderator team CAN handle it. The software changes I'll "soon" be uploading to the server will limit everyone to just three originating posts within any given calendar day (based on our EDT server clock). The limit will apply only to our "Main Forums," the Poetry and Prose section. Originating posts in Discussion forums won't be counted. Neither will posts in either the Sanctuary or Mature Content sections. When you start a new thread in an applicable forum, the new software will remind you what you've already posted for the day so there won't be any horrible surprises (assuming, of course, you read the screen). After you've posted your third poem or story for the day, you won't be able to post another one until after midnight EDT. For some of our more prolific writers, I know this will be a small burden on you. When our new software system is finally finished, we'll revisit this limitation and see if we can come up with something more fair. For now, however, the small burden for you will reduce a much greater burden on our Moderating team and help insure that our high standards will continue to be met. |

Thanks Mr. Wizzard! It really warmed me and brought a smile to read some of the new comments. Granted, in another week or so I'll have to do more searches on those commented upon pieces to check for infringement, but that's the tradeoff I reckon. Any word on when netpoets will be open for submissions again? And what's the progress on the already submitted pieces? Wait, don't tell me.... *cackle* |

Ron, I'm sure all of our senior members won't mind the early tweaks as you see how the process develops. You've undergone [once again] some mind-bending work...just so we can have one of the supreme poetry homes in the 'Net. Thank you so much! |

I suspect these tweaks will be readily accepted by our members and will surely help PiP run more smoothly than ever. Nicely done, m'friend... |

LOL Ron, I sure wish I could produce three poems a day, but it seems I can't even produce one in three months Thanks for all the work pal, I'm sure nobody's going to complain. Now I have to figure out how to get to the main page Just push a button I guess? LOL it's been a while but I think I still can get there. Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

Thanks for all your hard work Ron. I'm looking forward to reading some of the main site comments, as well as seeing some of the new forum revisions. |

quote:Guess my question for the moment is, IF most of the members comply ... and the 'newbies' are the main over-posters, why not just limit those under the proposed Probationary Membership to the three posts per day ... and that would seem to me to take care of the problem ? My understanding is that the 'three per day' limit applies to ANY THREE posts (including ALL FORUMS, or does that preclude the 'talky-talky forums as well ?), not as in the past, when it was not only suggested, but encouraged that those wonderful prolific poets could post 'three per day' in each and every forum, correct ? Back later as more thoughts come up~ Clarification appreciated for all to see~ AND .. did I 'understand' that all those poems that were entered for inclusion on the Main Site are now posted ... or just 'replies' to the old poetry posted there ? Color me confused, as usual~ |

quote: It would be moderately difficult to get our existing software to differentiate between Member Levels. Those are essentially display-only and have never been used for anything even resembling Rights and Privileges. That's why Sanctuary, set aside for Senior Members, can't stop a Junior Member from posting. quote: The ONLY forums affected are those listed under the Poetry and Prose heading. The Workshops, Discussion, Mature Content, and Tech Talk will not count towards the three-a-day rule. quote: Just the replies, Marge. I also have another 10,000 replies, give or take, to edit and post. Once those are up, I have several thousand poems (already edited and ready to fly) that will be uploaded to the main site. July and August are, by far, the slowest months of the year for poetry, and I'm trying really hard to get everything caught up during this slack time. As those in DM know, however, the forums are pulling me away from the main site right now, so it's hard to make any promises beyond my usual "soon." quote: And it looked so much like purple to me. LOL. |

I know you work constantly towards making this an even better site, and easier to maintain with the manpower available. Therefore whatever you do, is always appreciated and usually great! Sounds good to me, but then I can't even post one poem a day or week lately |

Just one question. What about posts like this though: /pip/Forum28/HTML/001324.html The member didn't exceed three posts, but he exceeded three poems in one day! Will that still be allowed? |

Having read some of the new comments on the main site to one of my poems, it is possible to update my email on the main site so people can contact me, or it would be sufficient if a note could be added to the introduction that I do not mind if the poem is read at a loved one's funeral or a memorial service. |

Tim, I can update your email at the main site, presuming you want to use the same one in your profile here? It often takes a week or so to become effective. I typically update records for our authors several times a week, then upload the whole database on the weekend. Once you have a valid email address again, you can visit our Author Login and have the system send you a password. With that, you can change most of the data associated with your work, although again, it usually takes a week or two to be updated. A good place for notes or blanket permissions would be in the Biography, a section I added last year (because students are constantly emailing our authors for school projects). HTH |

Excellent updates Ron. Because sometimes the new ones post so many poems in one day that other poems get pushed back 2 to 4 pages and nobody reads them. Poetry is beauty in words. |

Hope you got my email as well, Ron. Found that I hadn't changed a defunct one with the one I use here, though the defunct one has been null for a good 6 years. Just never thought about it. Small wonder I never got email requests. |

Thanks Ron! Changed email to one that actually works and added a brief bio. You are truly one amazing dude! By the by, will there be an author login at netpoets that's a bit easier to find? |

From my understanding, Greeneyes, about a year after Ron opened netpoets for new submissions, he got flooded. Think Biblical proportions. Sure, the poet was the first editor, hopefully, and Ron was the final editor and webmaster. Well over 5000 poems. Thousands of comments on current poems. A good chunk of those finally got uploaded and it's a lot easier to read over and edit those than it is for a poem. For starters, comments are almost always for a single particular poem. There's a slew of categories, many many more than when I made my first submission, and not everyone chooses the best category for a submitted poem. Add the intro, then intro blurb, and then the poem, and that's a lot of possible editing. Multiply that single poem by 5000+. Then add the time maintaining these forums. I'm surprised Ron has time to sleep, train wild birds not to poop on his camera lens, and watch corn grow. By the by, I think the 5k poem count was roughly 3 or 4 years ago. Only Ron knows the current count. |
