The forums will very soon be undergoing some pretty major changes. Over the past several days, our Moderator team has been testing the new software. There is still a great deal to be done, but things are looking good and it should be only a matter of days. On February 1, we will be moving. New server. New software. Even a new domain name. There are a lot of reasons for the changes you'll soon see. The new software will give us some increased functionality and provide the answer for a few very-requested features. A slightly enhanced design will also give us some much needed room to grow the forums beyond those we already have. And, of course, the move will also facilitate the return of our missing Archives. The server and new domain name are absolute necessities, the only possible solution to our continued growth. By splitting the forums off the main site, with different domain names, I'll be able to run them on different machines during our busiest times of the year. The main site, for example, will remain on Ceres for at least the better portion of February (our busiest month of the year), while the forums continue to chug away on our new server, Athena. When traffic returns to normal levels, after Valentine's day, netpoets.com will likely also move to Athena, to help conserve costs. Ceres (bless her heart) will be retired. Our new server is much faster and should last us a while. But, when traffic again increases, we will still have the option of separating the main site from the forums. In short, a new domain for the forums gives us options we didn't have before. The forums, needless to say, will be unavailable during the actual move. I wish I could give everyone a better idea of when the move will happen and how long it will take place. Because I hate alarm clocks, when will largely depend on what time I get out of bed on Feb 1 (I'm typically an early riser, though). How long will depend on so many issues I can't even list them. I can, however, give you my expectations, as long as you promise not to hold me to them. I expect to start the move around four or five o'clock in the morning, EST. I hope it takes no more than two hours. Should you come the forums during the move, you will find our usual "closed for maintenance" sign. Should you come to this URL after the move, you'll find a notice and link to the new address. There are a few things you can do to help prepare for the move. A new domain name is going to mean a loss of your current cookies. When we moved to Ceres, a bit over a year ago, there were a LOT of people who didn't know their password. Understandable, since the cookies mean you almost never have to enter it here. But you are going to NEED it when we get to Athena. I strongly suggest you go into your Profile (the only place you can view your password) and make sure you haven't forgotten it. While you're there, make sure the email address is still valid, too. I "think" your Private Library entries will move without any intervention on your part. But if there's anything in there you simply cannot afford to lose, it wouldn't be a bad idea to either write down the URLs or use your browser to bookmark them. Just to be safe. I also want to extend everyone a special one-time offer to either change or merge your User Names. This has been requested in the past and I've unfortunately had to tell people it couldn't be done. Once you select a User Name you're pretty much stuck with it (unless you want to lose your previous posts). The reason was simple. Your User Name is embedded into every post you've ever made and the only way to change it is to change ALL the references to it. That would mean sweeping the entire forum database of over 60,000 pages and nearly half a million posts. Ouch. Well, guess what? Moving to a new domain means I have to sweep the entire database and change all the old domain references to point to the new one. I've already written the software to do so and, thanks to the incredible speed of Athena, it works pretty well. And, as long as I'm sweeping… If you would like to change to a brand new User Name, please post your requests to this thread. If you already have two User Names and would like to merge them into one, with all the posts of the two credited to one account, post both names here - and be very specific about which one should be "live" when the process is completed. Sorry, Doreen, but we can't merge more than two.  Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about the changes you'll soon see. Our move won't be without headaches, I know, but I think it's going to be worth a few aspirins when all is said and done. I hope, a couple weeks from now, y'all will feel the same way. |

WOOOHOOO RON!!!! I'm looking forward to the changes at netpoets. There is nothing that I need to change since I will be Ladycat forever. Wow, that was a lots of hard work on the part of you and your moderators. Thank you so much for making this site bigger and better. I'm doing my part to keep people coming to this site all the time. A friend of mine wanted to do a documentary on the Netpoets and wanted ideas on what to do it about. One of the things was all the chnges and who is the brains behind the operation (which is you) and where all the poets get there ideas. I think that it would be interesting to say the least. When I head to Cali that is one of the things that we are going to talk about. Once again, thank you for all the hard work that you have put into this. I hope that it all comes out perfect. Umm Ron, when you go into preferences you can't view your password. It's all star'd out. So how are we supposed to know what it is? I mean I remember mine, but some might not. Now like my Mom had the name Sandgrain, and forgot her password and had to registar as asandgrain, can she merge these two names together still? Or is the old one gone now? And is she able to change her password that you gave her to a new one without messing up any names? |

Ron, I'm adding this here because I just searched it. I think OBLIVION was given a bad e-mail flag notice or however that works. Once... A LONG while back I posted something unnappropriate in one of the OPEN forums, and it was locked. When no one could reach me because of the bad e-mail address, it was announced in the forums where it was locked. I don't even know the e-mail I provided for that name, but apparently it wasn't a valid one. I was trying to go back in and make sure (since the names are case sensitive) that it actually is spelled in all caps, and I was trying to get a new password because I didn't remember my old one for that name. This all sounds great Ron! I can't wait to see the changes and such. Oke, I have two names and I only use this one now, Dark Enchantress, so I'd like to combine the two. My other screen name is Maharet. I only have a few posts on that sn but I'd still hate to lose them. Just so that I'm perfectly clear and all...I want to keep the screen name Dark Enchantress. Ron and all, upon actually reading the posts here (what a novel idea!) it looks like i can not create TrampPoet and merge bleeding into it, eh? I believe i created Tramp Poet awhile back, but due to age and the Sixties can not remember the password nor email address i used...sigh. So i just created TrampPoet (without the space between) with the email of ejunkie@juno.com i would like to merge the two (bleeding and TrampPoet)and become just TrampPoet. i think i will take some pills and go lie down now sorry for the confusion...i think i hurt myself... < !signature--> once bleeding... perhaps to be TrampPoet [This message has been edited by bleeding (edited 01-31-2001).] |
