Sorry If I shouldn't be saying this here.  As you can see from the number of posts I'm quite new.  Anyway sometimes I want to search the forums for pieces posted by particular poets.  However I find that if I do a search I get all the posts by that person includeing replys.  My idea is that it would be nice to search topics originating from a certain poet or even if it told you who posted the origional topic when you do a search especially as there is a lot of stuff to read out there.  Thanks awfully for listening.  Gotta go before I make a fool out of myself.

Wes

Wes
You're not making a fool of yourself... We'd all like to be able to do that - Unfortunately, the software is written to give us all of the poet's posts and comments combined - That glitch hasn't been solved yet.... Be patient....

Actually, it's not a glitch - that's the way the software was originally designed. You have to remember the program wasn't written specifically for posting poetry, and the designers "assumed" (hey, we all know THAT word) people would want to be able to search the replies as well as the original posts.

I have seriously considered changing it, both for the reason you cite, Wes, and because it would dramatically speed up the search function. I can imagine very, very few instances where I would want to search the text of a reply for something. Trouble is, if I do remove the replies then we can't search anything but the originating post.

What does everyone else think? Are there many (any?) instances where you need to find something in a reply???

I think you it might be a good idea to be able to choose how you want to search (I've noticed this problem myself).  Maybe a drop down box with options like originating posts, replies, or both.  Or possibly when the results are given have a new label telling if an item found is a reply or originating post.. well, just my ideas.

That would certainly be possible (with a bit more programming involved), but it wouldn't do anything to make the search feature faster. In could, in fact, slow it down quite a bit.

What's everyone else think?

I would prefer to search just for an originating post. Often we reply in poetic form, but if you needed that post, you would search for the member's originating posts.. If it speeds it up, I vote for that one!

Hi Ron! I think the search function should just be for originating posts. I tried a few times to look up some posts by an author and got lost in the maze! I really don't see the need anymore to list all of the posts by someone. It would make searching a valuable tool to me if it were just the poets original posts. I stopped using 'search' because I can never seem to find what I am looking for in a timely fashion. Well, that's my 2 cents! Thanks for asking!

Well its quite intimidating to reply to something which so many of you replied to especially as you all have made so many posts.  Hovever Ron (I am addressing the correct person here I hope) maby it would just be simpler to just leave the search engine more or less as it is.  However add an additional field to the results column.  Telling who the origional post was by.  It mightn't speed up the search engine but it might speed up a persons private search time?  I don't know if that would work or not just a suggestion!  Sort of like the topic starter column in a normal forum.  However I think you have enough on your plate at the moment so maby its best to let the matter lie?

Okeydoke... since I posted a question and was led here, I'll join in...

Ron: You asked for an example of someone wanting all posts... well, I'm one. I use the search feature almost daily... to see what I responded to the day before. I don't post many poems, but I respond to LOTS... and I often want to see if those responses garnered any responses... I simply don't have the time or the memory cells to scroll back through everything trying to remember what I posted to whom... and even that would be faster than trying to search on each individual author's name as PDV suggested. If I could remember every author and the name of the poem and had unlimited time to scroll, I wouldn't need search at all! So limiting search by author to original posts only will seriously limit my enjoyment... if a option for either is available, I'll be overjoyed... even if I do feel a tiny bit guilty for asking for the extra programming! *G*
