Twas the night before the Fourth of July
And all through the forum
It seems every poet
Had lost their decorum.

All the colors were missing
And so were the features.
The halls of the forum
Were filling with creatures!

    

Poet DeVine in her nightie
And me in my cap
Had just settled down
To the cool sounds of rap.

When, up from the rooftop
There arose such a clatter
So loud the DeVine one
Had emptied her bladder!!

From the chimney they came down
The creatures were swarming!
She screamed they were ugly
(I thought they were charming)

There were gray mice and white mice
And rats by the dozens.
I'll swear two resembled
My ex-wife's fat cousins!!

    


We set traps out and baits, too
A futile endeavor
To capture the rodent
But they were too clever.

They clawed and they chewed
On each poem in the place..
Even ate Toerag's
Though they had little taste.

By dawn they were so fat
From all of their crime
That they all overdosed
From exposure to rhyme.

They all jumped on DeVine
And, with kiss on the cheek
Said, "Happy July 4th to all
And to all a Squeak! Squeak!!!!!"
