I finished loading up the truck,
I guess I'll go to bed.
A thousand thoughts from yesterdays,
Keep running through my head.

It's nearly Christmas morning-
But what's a man to say?
Tonight my heart's in Texas-
Fifteen hundred miles away.

I didn't make the Finals-
I barely paid my bills.
I stayed up north to peel some broncs.
At least my tank is filled.

The kids won't see their daddy-
Their mamma doesn't care.
But I understand her feelings,
Cause I wasn't ever there.

I sold my soul to rodeo-
And going down the road.
It really didn't matter,
If I rode, or I got throwed.

I used to call it freedom-
But I think I got it wrong,
For the lifestyle was a prison...
Now I sing a sad, old song.

I used to call it freedom,
But at last I realize,
My freedom caused the heart break,
I saw in my darling's eyes.

My choices cost me everything,
I wanted all along...
Now all I have is memories,
And the knowledge, "I was wrong."

So Merry Christmas, cowboy...
You'd better go on home.
And love that wife, and younguns-
Ere you wake and find them gone.

When you wake up Christmas morning,
And you see the Christmas tree...
Thank God, you stopped and listened.
Then say a prayer for me.

This is heartbreaking.  Why are all your songs heartbreaking?  And though I never rodeoed I always loved the cowboys.

Well GS it just rocks for writin'. Thanks.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
