To love a cat.
Is having litter always scattered all over
the floor.

To love a cat.
Is almost gagging when the litter box
needs to be cleaned.

To love a cat.
Is always being stared at with feline
eyes when eating supper.

To love a cat.
Is having to shoo away a feline head
when closing the refrigerator door.

To love a cat.
Cupboard doors, closet doors, and
dresser drawers must never be left
open even for a minute.

To love a cat.
Is always having a furry body underfoot.
To almost trip over that furry body onto
your face.

To love a cat.
Is to always have the newspaper,
magazines or any paper occupied by a
furry body lying on top.

To love a cat.
The lovely appearance of the couch,
chair or other furniture must be sacrificed
to busy claws.

To love a cat.
You must be willing to care for an
independent creature.

Never forcing that creature to change to
your image of the perfect pet.

There are no perfect people.
There are no perfect cats.
If we are willing to live with the faults of
family and friends.
We must learn to live with the faults of
our cats.

To love a cat.
Means embracing a cat’s total being.
To love that total being to the day it dies

As I am owned by two cats, your writing made me smile.  I might add

To love a cat
means

to wear pawprints
on your face

to select only outfits
which coordinate with kitty's fur

to leave an unmade bed
until the furbundle tumbles from
the blankets

to shiver without blankets
next to the curled up figure
asleep on the bed

arbpoet, I too am owned by a cat. A lovely blue eyed Bengal named Tazzi. He gives me love in abundance, especially when I watch tv, he unfailingly watches everything with me. He's such a vocal critic, I seriously think he's lusting after Roger Ebert's position. Here's a pic of him. Yes of course he has bed priviledges.

Thank you for your comments. I wrote this poem before my cat died. She has been gone for almost 4 months. I still think about her often. I have been thinking about getting another cat.

Thank you for your reply Twinkyfl1. I like the picture of your cat. Tazzi is a cute name. My cat died after I wrote this poem, it was been 4 months. I still miss her. When I get another cat, it will also be a female. I will name her Josie, after the cartoon Josie and the PussyCats. I loved that cartoon when I was a kid. My cat that died was named Catrina. She was a long haired Tortoiseshell.

I do so know what you mean! But they are worth every bit of LOL

I read in one of the replies that you wrote, that your cat died four months ago and that you were thinking of getting a new one. Our cat (Magic) died just before Christmas last year. We then bought two cats from an animal shelter two months later and they brought a double dose of joy back into our home. They are Felicity and Emily (Fissy and Emmy ~ or Fiss and Em when they get into mischief! lol

Your poem had me smiling and nodding throughout my reading of it.

Giving you a warm and welcoming Holiday Hug,
Earth Angel

I find I'm lost when I'm not owned by a cat or two... or more. *S* And you're right... just as we accept the people we love, warts and all... the joy of a furry friend far outweighs the drawbacks! *S*
