There, There stands he. Best, Best of trees.
He’s tall and strong, He’s stood there long; There, The long standing tree.
It was ages ago I last saw him, A friendly thunder storm Had come giving his hair a trim, A branch is split off And twigs and leaves round his rim, But he stayed the storm, Shaking branches and leaves So to give foreknowledge And to warn Birds flying in passage.
A while ago tides were high, Flood waters came rushing by, But firmly he made his stand Roots deeply within the ground.
Smaller trees were washed away, But not him, Not my friend, He still stands there today To greet me as I pass this way, He’s my friend And he’ll always stay.

The metaphor of the tree is an outstanding one to anyone who has ever had a tree in their yard as a child that was 'the tree.' To bring this long standing tree into the same class as a friend is fascinating to me. The analogy of a rock by my side I have heard, but the tree is an interesting take. Thanks for sharing!

Just to let you know I am a tree lover as well. I so much enjoyed the read...thank you. Hugs~NancyNow - while the leaves still dance on the wind While the moon and the clouds come spinning Will you whisper my name again? Again..and again....

I see the images here of strength, longevity and faithfulness.
I remember planting a tree in my grandmother's yard when I was about 4 years old. Now that I am nearing 41, that tree is strong and beautiful and will probably be there in 200 years from now.
Thanks for the memory.

Thanks all, but Sherry, I'm impressed by the picture (wish I could figure out how to do that).

I loved this part. I remember when I was younger I had a favorite tree at my elementary school. I wonder if my friend is still there today.
