      Monkeys and Madmen!
        (on cultural entropy)

My feet beat the pavement silly
past lazy old dogs
and little girls...
hopscotching their dreams away
until they are old like me
an ‘pregnant with a question’!

“It’s getting a bit too close today,
     Hieronymous;
won’t you please take this ‘monkey’
     of my back?!”

During such moments
I often wonder
just how man fools there are
and self-made madmen,
damned by their own astute
   perceptions
of exactly ‘who they are’
and what they shall ‘never be’!

“It’s getting  way too warm today,
     Hieronymous;
won’t you please take this ‘monkey’
     of my back?!”

Once I too was young, and unafraid
I stood so self-assured of ‘certain
   certainties’
beyond just birth and death...
but soon grew bald and older now
until, at last, I fell victim to the truth
for what could be said,
and what could be done
when there were just too many dreams....
far too many dreams
frailly formed somehow
of book-bricks and poetic mortar
so easily lost to rain...or tears?!

“It’s getting far to hot today,
     Hieronymous;
won’t you please take this ‘monkey’
     of my back?!”

Perhaps nothing’s left to ‘do or say’
and then one simply dies
when there is too little love
or too much...trapped deep inside;
but here, my friend, is ‘no great matter’
for it’s ‘all been said and done’
a million times before!

It’s oh so hot, so very, very hot today,
     Hieronymous;
and the tail grows tight about my neck!
please take this ‘monkey’ off my back!

....................TOO LATE!..................

Dead: One superfluous male...of
      cultural strangulation?!

not sure about your ending..but I am never good at interpreting poems...

Though I did enjoy this especially:

Once I too was young, and unafraid
I stood so self-assured of ‘certain
   certainties’
beyond just birth and death...
but soon grew bald and older now
until, at last, I fell victim to the truth
for what could be said,
and what could be done
when there were just too many dreams....
far too many dreams
frailly formed somehow
of book-bricks and poetic mortar
so easily lost to rain...or tears?!

Your talent truly shined in this piece Bruce.
The ending, of course, is yet unwritten to the optimist...grin

Very cool write.
