In my travels I came across this statement: “The foundation of all mental illness is avoidance of legitimate suffering.” A staggering thought! Put in perspective, one must ask “What is ‘legitimate suffering’? Is any suffering ever legitimate? Or have we been programmed to accept it as such? If suffering was legitimate no one would seek to avoid it - that’s simple logic. That people would avoid suffering indicates it is not ‘legitimate’ but some un-natural imposition. Of course, now come the therapies: the drugs, the counselling sessions, not to mention complaints and blame. When the suffering continues despite these efforts to eradicate it then yes, likely it turns into psychoses - mental illness. |

"“The foundation of all mental illness is avoidance of legitimate suffering.” That's funny--it also happens to be the same impetus for drug abuse. Hmmm... Loved the poem, but it's kinda hard for me to objective, bein' so close to the source and all. and um, psychotic breaks can be a temporary response to hyperstimulation. It actually IS the psyche's self-defense. I'll shaddup tho. grin Me arse is showin'. Loved the poem. |

Hmm, interesting points to ponder. However, my noggin is usually ensconced deeply in sand like that of an ostrich, for avoidance of all kinds of suffering is my preference. Besides, it's a lot cheaper than counselling and pharmaceuticals! Love & Christmas Light, EA |
