I heard it on the news

Long after the edges
of the newspaper
innocent and open on the table
had become scalloped then curled

The silver handle of a curling iron
lay on its side resting
its arrow pointing
with heavy meaning to "on"
still hot

A stairway curved up into the blue
of a still humming wind
and a lonely toilet bowl
patiently waited
the leaf falling like a dancer
into its opening

Soot clung to the chimney
of a family that was waiting
to light their first fire
on Christmas Eve
----------
another fire in Southern California

Geesh. I can sense the flustration here. Fire was a stepping stone for [wo]man; Unfortunate that people stumble with their carelessness. I understand, I too live in CA.

yes, I've watched it on the news...and hope that your all ok...it is very sad, that these hard working people have endured such material loss...I watched and listend as one woman being interviewed, lost their entire ranch...but managed to save their horses, household pets and themselves.  No material thing can replace life...

You have described this fire well, and I can feel the grave concern for so many in your words.

Love to you Martie, always a pleasure to read you and pray with you.

It's so easy for an accident
to occur...

it's the ones that make it look
like an accident that make me
see red...

check in with me when you can.

Martie...So sad I seen it on the news this morning. You know for awhile I lived in Ventura County. It is such a beautiful place as is most all of California.
Praying they put it out before anymore damage is done...Paul

A very sad situation that you have given voice to so beautifully, Martie.  I've heard it said that fire will be the cause of the world's "next" extinction but I choose not to think on that in case thoughts really are things.  Take care!  Helen

You wrote of the largeness of fate here Martiword.  We risk, in our daily living, communing with nature; the nature of fire, and the nature of chance.
Devastating circumstances befall good people.
A heart write, for sure.

The horror and utter devastation of the California fires has sickened me. I don't know where you live in relationship to the fires, but I have been keeping you and your loved ones in my prayers.

You put a human face on what has been reported impersonally been in the news.

Bell well! Be safe!
