Winterings

Please help, my head is tripping insane
I'm rolling on the floor in pain
please deposit pills and Christmas lights into my brain
'cause there's black ice clinging to my ribcage
bloodclot the poem and turn the page

Cloud-veiled moon cries
cigarette coughs of a song
I hum along with the shortwave sunrise
break the code and wring out all the wrong
my love has ever loved

Pretty sunsets all bleed into a dull glow
to hypnotize your butterfly eyes
on a freshly minted footprint in the snow
we searched all of New Years
for your angel feathers and devil tears
never found a thing
never had a song to sing
inside, outside our hearts
tearing our smiles apart

Watch close as I break the world into sparks
bounding around your fingers as you play my chords
honey your halo rewinds the pale grey dark
that surrounds me every day I fight the hordes
but you know I'd give all my spirit-split dreams
and all the failed summons of stray sunbeams
just to pull up the spring
and murder the needle cold
to mean everything
to your lovely soul

"Hey, it's me, I'm dynamite and I don't know why" -- Van Morrison, 'Sweet Thing'
