            College Library
           (an ‘impression’)

Wisps of sunlight catch a few books
  by surprise...
while the rest laugh and point from
  dim pigeon-holes
at the foolish ‘human-ants’ that seek
to tear at their hearts...
  (so young...so naïve!)
They contain the thoughts, the hopes,
  the fears...
the very souls of countless minds...
  that are no more...
some great...some small;
but, the books wear all their names
with silent dignity...unspoken elegies
  to the dead.
To hold the wisdom of the ages
  is their destiny...
how honorable a fate!.....
Mankind has no greater treasure
  to preserve...
and no greater treasury!......

When I was little, "Library Day" was magical.  You captured that for me in your poem.

Thank you.

Sad..this made me think of forgotten books..
pushed to the back of the shelves, spines perhaps damaged...
Made me want to run to the library.
Good write Bruce!

Bruce...wonderful poem!

The crackle of a turned page
someone clearing their throat
thoughts zipping
in and out of sections
skidding across tables
zapping from computer terminals
perfume of knowledge
crisp and clean

I love libraries!
with an edge of dusty history
everything hushed and polished.

~sigh~
I love the smell of those musty old volumes, those tomes of forgotten tombs of wisdom,
words that come alive with the turn of each page.

This is a treasure!

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

Libraries are like
antique stores
and I never go into
an antique store
without looking for
stories...

Enjoyed this so much...
I've put it in my own library!

Thanks everyone....for your comments pursuant to this impressionistic poem!.....
As a college prof....I just couldn't avoid that topic....I love the sights, smells...the entire ambiance/atmospherics of old, eclectic book stores and libraries...my favorites...the Oxford and Edinburgh University libraries....most fine places for 'writes' and poet-dreams!

I love to tread the bed of others
To read the why and share the sigh

Sad, thinking back through the centuries
about all of the books that have been
destroyed because they spoke of a life that
was forbidden...verboten....
