To Love Alone

Sunset’s fight against the day brings a fitful night.
Moon and stars go wandering by, in the fading light.
Rush of silence splits the air, cowing daylight's sound;
Deafening roar—nothingness--gathers all around.

Looking into midnight dark, fear is close at hand.
Spreading as a murky pall all across the land.
Could this veiled, secret place, deep inside my heart,
Be a place to trust the fates, love I hold apart?

Long ago, far away, I loved her all alone,
In my mind-made prison cell, not of steel and stone.
Will my unrequited love know the time I spend?
Can a love who knows me not last until the end?

For I loved her from afar, known to only me,
And I waited, silently, for eternity.
Still I pondered all alone, on that fateful day
Was I wiser to have loved, when she passed away?

Dawn’s old fight against the night brings a fitful morn.
Sun and clouds march solemnly, as with her soul borne.
A rush of laughter splits the air, from I know not where.
Do I feel the warmth of love, floating on the air?

If in life I loved alone, as the years went past,
Now in twilight life I know, love had held me fast.
For this love--a secret joy--known to only one;
Marked the time ‘til Heaven called, and her heart was won.

I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran

When a man can describe, poetically,
or just in a word or two,
his emotions that belay a vastness
of soul...

then he is a poet of art, and heart...

and singularly wonderful.

Thanks, jarrett.

I was in a contemplative mood...comtemplating what happened, that is.  She isn't dead, yet.  But in reality she IS gone forever, so my eternal love will remain unrequited.

Thanks for writing.

Thanks, Sunshine.

Aren't you a wonderful responder!  I could stop eating and live off of healthy doses of that kind of praise!

Thank you for being so kind!

Hi, Chris.

I'm glad that you liked it so much.  I agonized over whether to post it or not, as it is rather "mushy!"   However, now I am very happy that I took the chance.
