In the high darkness on a canyon wall, moon fading past the rim of time, a small fire burned and in its sheltered glimmer shimmered safety's sad illusions; so very long ago, we learned to capture energy until we could set it free to chase away the terrors and keep at bay the hungry demons of the night. On the high darkness of a fortress wall, built around a life fading into time, a small candle burns within a window cut through the yearning stone in a room turned to face an endless sight; so very long ago, I learned to focus memory until I could set it free to chase away the longings and keep at bay the empty shadows of the night. Anyone, who thinks it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, has never really feasted at love's banquet besotted on its true elation, only to survive to face the cost, and having outlived all given reason has never stood at despair's edge where life's only shriven choice is the bottomless fall, where emptiness is a hunger far beyond the pain of mere starvation. ©2006 by icebox . |

"where emptiness is a hunger far beyond the pain of mere starvation." And I got to read this for free...but the understanding....well....that costs. I will read it again and again, Mr. C. .....jo |

They who do not know have no idea of the feelings...both high and low... And I don't think much has changed over the years... |

You make a good point, icebox. I suppose the answer lies in would one do anything different knowing what one knows now... CG |

Sadly beautiful--this aches. And I have, unknowingly, been debating it myself. But I think if I have my druthers, I'd druther ante up again. I'm going for broke, for sure. But I gotta fill up all this nuthin' with somethin'. Your poetry is always a sure thing though. |
