As the bell rings...... |

The bell's echo fades, Children's feet, like the stampeding thunder of fleeing game, retreat towards the wire clad gate, And I am left alone In a room once filled with youthful voice, I sit in solitary thought, Paper flowers, smiling at me from walls coloured with the kind of bleak paint, bought in bulk, but flaking before the first coat dries. Pastel planets and a fading sun, bear witness to the tears that fall onto my desk. Pooling upon a page lined with red, teachers' ink. A gold star stuck in the corner of the proudest page. From 9 'til 3 I must not feel, Must don my dutiful, impassive mask. For teachers don't weep or dare to dream, We smile, we care, we tend. But when the smile begins to ache and the last page is turned, Who's there to hold my hand? To teach me to find my grace. I am lost in a darkness, Punctuated by daily glimpses into the still bright lives of those Who see me as nothing more than sixty minutes of compulsory distraction. Shuffling papers into a plastic bag, I switch out the lights, And steal the colour From my make believe world. |

~ A poem only a teacher could write. The first stanza was my favorite, and it drew me straight into the rest of the poem. The final stanza "wrapped it up" rather neatly. Enjoyed! "Melvin, the best thing you got going for you is your willingness to humiliate yourself." |

I like this one, and the glimpse of a life I've never lived. Nan (Pilgrim variety) |

Perhaps one should love to teach to be a teacher. I am the two-toed wanderer |

themute- Oh I do love the teaching, very much. I wrote this because I lost someone dear to me this morning and it occured to me that no matter how we feel, we always don a smile for the class. |
