The Figurehead She was still, as a man ate sympathy out of the eye sockets of her former figurehead. Two little bowls of empathy spoon-fed into his face like religious pamphlets into a shredder, with his teeth like rotating blades. Figurehead's presence is still there, Figurehead likes that. He always thought he was funny though, “Wanna hear my joke? You’ll just eat it up,” he would frequently say. But yes, he so misses the old times: “I sit so still upon your mantle above your fireplace. I will not want my presence to disturb you as I creep out the back door. I leave you but my face remains… I remember your vintage meat grinders. Especially the one that looked like an electrical socket, that oozed out three cords of meat onto the floor. You never fed me meat, not even mutton. You never let my mouth open or speak.” Figurehead would always say: “Wanna hear my joke? You’ll just eat it up.” She would reassure him, “No.” And then, nothing... Some of my readers say this poem is a little graphic and perhaps even grotesque but it is all purely metaphorical. “True absurdism is not less but more real than reality” - John Simon |

If I may astardize ol' Barry.... Graphic in the pursuit of quality, is no vice. Especially when you catch it! Attention PiP Administrators: Buy a dictionary. The word means, to make something irregular. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

You need to find a better dictionary, Ed, specifically one that offers semantic relationships (click on the S after looking up the lexical definition of the word). Like many, many words (including the root word here), there are definitions and uses I would find perfectly acceptable and more colloquial definitions and uses I would not. You want to declare a child illegitimate? We don't have a problem. You want to imply that such a child has less value than one born in wedlock? Personally, I'm not too crazy about that usage, but even that isn't the real issue. When push comes to shove, the root word (and thus its derivatives) is disallowed because I got tired of discussions exactly like this one from people too eager to use acceptable words in unacceptable ways. The filters went largely unused in these forums for most of six years because I knew software would never be smart enough to differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable. I'm a slow learner, I guess, but eventually I discovered that too many people aren't really any better at it. If anyone, including you, Ed, would like to continue a discussion on this, please open a thread in one of our Discussion forums to do so. Good poetry, such as Grant's, doesn't deserve to be hijacked for office politics. |

No -- I won't bite on the lure. You clearly don't care and I barely do. If you want to know what I think, you'll ask. Nice to see you in a poetry forum though -- I hope you'll come back sometime. [This message has been edited by Ratleader (06-02-2006 07:58 AM).] |
