5471 Maiden Ohio 14 June 2006 So soon, those days to count one year of birth, small fingers growing Her heart so precious, losing that touch wanting to hold her more in hand Does age account for so much a child inside, nature to progress On the shores of Lake Erie each wave tidal in promenade As to an Ohioan summer arbitrary to the colour of eyes read All as to a reminder, of past to present timing having found freedom Where age and trust meet love one year, one day, or just soon This land of the Buckeye tree there she was, standing, waiting still Ohio is known as the “Buckeye State,” the Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra), is the official state tree, of the State of Ohio, USA. Buckeyes are trees native to temperate areas in North America, Europe and eastern Asia. The name Ohio, can be traced to an American Indian word meaning “great” and was first given to the historic river that borders the Ohioan state. The name ’buckeye’ also being of native American Indian origin and the buckeye tree derives the name from its large brown seeds, which resemble the eyes of the white-tailed deer. Because the markings on the buckeye nut (or fruit) resembled the eye of a buck, the Indians called it “hetuck” or “buckeye”. The Buckeye State nickname for Ohio became official in 1953, when the state legislature named the Ohio Buckeye the state tree. © 2006 Christopher W Herbert (a New Zealand Poet) a poet who cares |
