we drive to Sandwich
Becky
Sandy and I
to visit ghosts
and one live person
tires sing on route 6
and we sing along with Linda Ronstadt
I’ve got a crush on you sweetie pie
I had a crush on a man in Sandwich
ghost now

we stop for stuffed quahogs
at Bobby Byrne’s
Cape Codders never eat little necks
tough and chewy
like us
crave cool jazz
but keeping room won’t open
till leaves change
tradition

find a carousel in Sandwich
I pass the gnarled tooth tiger
looking for horse
my legs seem to remember this horse
this carousel
this round and round
hey
was this here when we were kids
nope
it’s new
sometimes things change on Cape Cod

pull into driveway
grey shingled
two story
needs work
woman answers
loose jeans
red hair pulled back
Teague here?

naw
moved on
Connecticut I believe

on the way back
Linda Ronstadt fills the car
Becky turns her off
before she can sing
what’ll I do?

That last line was the clincher
and I won't get the song out of my head
for the rest of the evening...

maybe even the week.

:: Sings (somewhat off-key) ::

You're so good
You're so good
You're so good
Lady, you're so good.

Sorry - I got lost in Linda on this roadtrip!
