Oh, little creature of the sky Perched there upon a window’s ledge You could have rested anywhere Upon a fence or hemlock hedge But you have chosen to alight Close to this old observant eye For you have messages from God On how to live and how to die You soar to winters feeding place Until the season calls you home And never from your nesting chores Do you have tendencies to roam Before the dawn you sing your hymn So all of nature knows your worth Then rest unnoticed ‘neath a bush When it is time to leave this earth Oh, little creature of the sky Somehow you knew that I was ill And came obligingly to rest Beside me on my window sill ELizabeth Santos |
