The Racer Among the stars, she sprints behind the sled Runners gliding on snow, darkness ahead The dogs' gait is smooth; they run a steady pace The cold nips her cheeks, the wind caresses her face Northern Lights dance above her, soft blue, yellow and green The dogs run to the future, no thought to where they have been. As a racer she stands tall. She is confident and strong. Guiding a sled with her hands, with her dogs she belongs. Few have lived their life doing all they desire But this racer knew how to channel her fire. She is known far and wide for all she has done But there is far more to know than the races she won. She is a mother, a daughter, a dog musher and wife She is a lover of animals and a lover of life She is known for the braid that over her shoulder hung She is known for her smile and all the good she has done. She is loved. She is cherished. She became our very own. She is riding behind the dogs on a race to her new home. We will miss her. We will love her. She is always in our hearts. Who will not think of Susan Butcher when the Iditarod starts? She shines like a star always just within our sights. She will shine down upon us and brighten our nights. May the race never end. May she always hear the snow. May the dogs run before her wherever she goes. aziza |

Just for some info on this poem. Susan Butcher was one of the most winning racers of the Iditarod sled dog race. The race is a 1,049 miles and she won it 4 times. Only one other woman has ever won the race, and that woman was the first woman to win. But, Susan went on to set the bar for men and women. She "retired" to have children with her husband (which they did). Susan battled Leukemia and had a bone marrow transplant that looked successful. Recently, she found out that the Leukemia had come back. While in treatment she died. That day was Saturday, August 6. That is what this poem is about. Thank you to all who read it. aziza |

I thought it so sad that she died so young. She was a true brave adventurous spirit. |
