               The Mortar's Whump

               After an anthem that praises
               the rocket's red glare
               and bombs bursting . . .
               firemen here play with fire
               to an eager crowd,
               anticipating.

When the night is full enough
               to hide the battery's details,
               it begins.
               Tons of phosphorus whites rise
               cobalt blues burst
               blood reds glow
               and fire yellows cascade.
               It goes on and on.
               It is quite a show.

               Curious,
               how we have prettified
the tools of war and gore
               into a noisy carnival party
               to take the children to.
               But I recall the drop
of metal shells into metal tubes
               and I hear something else.

               Mortar after mortar,
               the huge finale is deafening!
               An all out attack!
               The cheers go up!
               The horns are sounded!
               Bravo!  Bravo!

The smoke drifts off with the spectators,
but at midnight, as though the battle
               was on again,
a tactic to disturb the enemy's sleep,
               the miswired and the misfired
               are set off, sent aloft.
               Surprise!

No one is left to cheer.

Could we have another anthem, please,
               one that praises something else?

               There is so much more.

There is  so   much    more . . .

Kraw~
How exacting your thoughts ...
the title sound came to life from the 'whump'~

It is good to see you here~

sighing
Yes, there is so much more that we could praise, to sing about and be proud of:
majestic mountains, awesome far-reaching rivers, canyons so grand they take your breath away, prairies and deserts in bloom, ocean sunsets, the wildlife, even sing of the buffalo that once freely roamed...
and especially the heart and soul of the people, the resiliency of all who make up these United States of America. Just about anything but bombs bursting.
The noise and smell of the fireworks
always nauseate me, literally, makes me cringe, puts me into an emotional nosedive, brings up mostly pictures of pain and suffering, the carnage of war.
Thank you, for this honest write.

Indeed Kraw...indeed.
Well said sir.

For it was not into my ear you whispered
But into my heart..
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul.

Kraw,Thank you for this. So often over the years I have felt the same. What an odd way we honor our country.  Why? I could never have put it into words. So once again. Thank you. martyjo
