When I was just a wee little girl, far too little to see we were poor, it didn't really matter much then and still doesn't anymore.
'Cuz my mother was the queen.
We didn't own a TV, not even a black and white, and the fridge wasn't even a fridge but an old 'ice box', empty some days and nights. But we always went to school with a lunch, mom was set in her ways in that. And the milkman kept bringing milk to the door. He didn't care that mom was too poor to pay, he just kept bringing a fresh bottle every day. My big sister Loretta heard about this TV show. It was called 'Queen For a Day.' She was determined my mom should play. So sis wrote the studio a letter, they sent two tickets, and she and mom went to the show on a bright hopeful sunny day.
Well, Mom won the crown but at home we didn't know 'till the neighbors ran over excitedly to say "Your mom is the Queen today!" I laughed and replied, "Yep, and my daddy is the King" But of course daddy had long since gone away. Imagine my surprise when the cab pulled in, and the Queen Mother stepped out carrying fresh roses and a rosy grin. Yes, my Mother was the Queen, if only for a day.
*
My mom and I never got along well, but in honor of her birthday, May 25, I wish to thank her for always insisting I stay in school, not be a dropout. Even though she never said it to my face, she apparently bragged to a relative that she was proud that I had a college education. So, this is for you, mom. I am sorry we never could carry on a pleasant conversation until it was too late.

I never resist reading a poem dedicated to a mother and your tribute on your dear Mother's Birthday is so very beautiful and moving, dear Kacy. I remembered it, because also the first time it impressed me deeply.
She knows what's in your heart.
Wonderful the scene of the Queen coming home with roses and a happy smile.
Love and hugs. Margherita

Kacy, all the "moving" scenes were being played out before my eyes as if they were all caught on film. Vivid! Touching! ~ and a very emotional read.
Happy birthday to your Mom!
Sending you a warm hug, Linda

I loved the queen for a day series and this poem brought back lots of memories. My mother was on "Make a Wish" she wished for shoes for the seven of us. Then when they came she was bitterly disappointed because they were very poor quality. But I was rememebring her happiness of the day when reading your poem not the sorrow of later. Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind. Unknown

I preasently do not get along with my mother, and this made me remember how it used to be when I was her baby boy and she was the queen of my childish affection.

Thank you for reading it again Margherita, and for your kind words. Linda, thanking you, for that reply. and Kethry? that's cool that she had a fun day, not so cool the quality was poor. Thanks for the story. My mom got a new washing machine, refrigerator, and stove. The Queen show was very popular in the 50's, the gifts were generous, though I hated seeing them pit one misery hard luck case against the other, when all of the ones on that stage should have/could have been helped a little bit. But ours was a large family of 6 struggling just to survive, and we 'won' over three or four others with smaller families or 'smaller' problems. They gave my mother a weekend paid vacation and paid my aunt Rose to babysit us, LOL, so said she scored OK too. ~sigh~ more than I intended to say... oh mute, if there is any way to converse pleasantly now, please do so

I'm glad your Mom got to have such a great day Kacy. What a thrill it must have been. And you know, while you might have regrets about not getting along, you know that she's proud, and watching over you now. You can never win or lose If you don't Run the race

I am sure that from above she see's how fine her daughter is and is beaming with pride. Often, Kacy we wait until it's too late, but somehow I always get the feeling they know how we feel. Loved this sweetie.
