we walked through the last green grass of the year and the ocean blue sky opened up to greet us hi! i could smell the smells of wood burning & dust thrown off blankets trudged up from where they slept for six months the towheaded child toddles stumbling through the grass towards a future that includes less and less of me and you my breath swirled about my hair a reddish hue thrown off to match the leaves and i waited patiently for you to say something was it a moment in time for you too? a brief vibrant second that you wished to freeze frame and hold carefully cradled in the palm of your hand i cupped my fingers beneath my sleeve catch this now before it flees! this second is mine now to play over and over again somehow in this child and you and me i felt a flash of possibilities for this child and for you and for me a forward peek into who we may one day be i studied your face expectently your blue eyes that matched the sky looked past me towards the child stumbling further and further away from you and me you seemed to see only past roads of choices never made and i realized that for you this was not a small perfect moment to cling to so i wrapped it up quietly beneath the wind and my breath tucked away to visit again and again until i'm forced to give it over to death |
