The Has Been

Seventeen years, some broke bones, and my mem'ries
Are all that I have left to show,
For one wrong decision, when I turned down college,
And followed the pro rodeo.

All the guys told me, I had what it took...
That I'd be the champion some day.
But it takes more than "try", and it sure weren't my looks
Now I'm just a "has-been" they say.

Maybe I am, a "has-been" that is,
My question is, "Has been a what?"
I wasn't a husband, a cowman, or such,
My mem'ries are all that I've got.

I can't recall Vegas, 'cause I never went-
No ten head, nor try for the gold.
I may not be broken, but I'm badly bent,
And reckon I've gotten too old.

I ain't been a banker, I ain't been a Doc...
No title could I ever claim.
I ain't been to Congress, nor fought in no war,
I've only yours truly to blame.

I had a few women, I ain't no Don Juan-
When the night was gone, they were gone, too...
I wish I could figger out, just what I have been,
Then maybe my song would be through.

hey cowboy poet, keep that pen busy
because some of us here enjoy
your stories from the dusty roads
whether from the POV of what was...or what is
we are hopefully, all has-beens
it's the ones-who-never-were
who should be shakin in their boots
as they ride or walk off into the sunset,
emptyhanded

Not being able to put brand or handle on you is not a bad thing.
In my opinion.
You "has been" so many things...that you can't wear a single label.
You wear the experience that others are trying to fit into.
Yeah   Maybe alot of suns have set.
Alot of winters have passed.
But...Two things that I was taught come to mind here...  They were said to me by someone I respect greatly and whos cut dont come around anymore....

Bad breath is better than no breath atall
              and
New Come, aint got nothin' on...Been Here

Another wonderful write !

Good question cowboy! What do they call you when your rodeo days are through? Ah well let the pups go out and play cause they come to us when they wanna know why things aren't going right.

Know yourself before you try to know someone else.

You may not of gone to College, but you sure did learn alot from the School of Hard Knocks.
Your title in my books will always be, "Gunslinger, the Gentleman Rodeo Poet".
