I might never write words that leap with
a single bound over deep waters.   That
fly graciously into a midnight sky.  Those
that fill the hourglass and wade the shallow
brook as babbles touch my ears softly.

The syllables that softly meld into the cotton
of a creased pillow still warm from a smothered
and stubbled face.   The sound of a loon’s
wings gently touching the water, calling for
yet another vowel, another sound that marches
through time.... then rests pitifully
upon the granite bench beside a stone
that covers the tear that fell long ago.

I may never sing a song that brings to my
throat a clutch....that weakens my knees and
dampens my palms as I strain to find words
that blend and weave, that crash like a symbol
and vibrate endlessly beneath a setting sun.

Though I may never...I shall not cast away the
desire, the want to do that which oft escapes
me. For in the moments of my musings, I
often am touched in ways only my words can speak
or tell...

My God, Barry, this is magnificent! This is quietly powerful, so full of sincerity and very moving. I absolutely love everything about it, I wish I had written it....This is a poet's creed for sure.  On behalf of all poets here and elsewhere, thank you for this.

It's a keeper

What a gorgeous, mellifluous write. As Honeybee says, it's a poet's keepsake.

WOW you have said what a poet feels in his soul. I myself write what is on my mind at the time.

Thanx Kacy....you do very well at "gut poetry" yourself...so, don't feel you have
every slighted yourself.

Debo...it is the gut where the strong feelings come from....and from there it is
just a matter of expressing them....you will
know when you have done what you are trying
to achieve...

K...Beauregard says kiss my grits!!  No,
seriously....tanx kid!

Wowwwwweeeee, Magnus!  I agree with all the previous responses, especially ThisDiamond!  You had me flying, floating, darting, diving, gliding, glowing, sitting on a thinking stone and melting into the exquisite beauty of your poem.  There's the loon again (a bird I wouldn't know if you hadn't taught me about it - I think it has a special meaning for you - your muse, perhaps? - whether or not, I especially love your poems with a loon in them).  Thank you for this wonderful experience.

My feelings exactly, Barry. And we don't ever
know who else we touch with our words either.
I know your's touch me.

I too thoroughly enjoyed your poem and this -

"Though I may never...I shall not cast away the
desire, the want to do that which oft escapes
me."

speaks for many of us and perhaps we hold those desires until another lifetime if there such a thing be.

You may never, but you do!  I love your muse!  She dances to the harpstrings of your mind, leaves me ineloquent until all I can do is breathe in your words until they are part of me as well.

Thank you.
