But What Have you Done Lately |

I have written words to describe flowers and trees, How they smell up close and scent the early spring breeze, Their swaying as a dancer, feet stuck in the ground Making a moaning, rustling, gentle of a sound; How day lilies open full with the early sunrise, Last in beauty the whole day then in darkness dies. I have words, Describing the spirit torn, Animated bones rise, with death reborn, Tormented souls seek With their decomposing bodies too weak To dare walking the sunlight Wandering for vengeance during the night; I have words. I have deeds Hidden deeply within my words spoken, Encouraging ones, discouraging ones, Promises made, some promises broken, Yet beyond words and promises the deeds Forcing pathways of improvement with them, Suggesting ways and some brightening days Emotionless emotions I can send. I have words that are deeds. But what have I done lately? Isn’t that always the thing, Past gone so fast, what will the future bring? I really don’t know My words may break upon nothingness, An ocean lost from the shore, I may sink back to my darkness And do no more, But still, Perhaps, I’ll write and others may read And find within a deed Filling a need, But what have you done lately? A very important question - one we all need to ask ourselves - and we need to define "lately" as "now", not "last week". I enjoyed the honest introspection - I felt I was getting to know you - and I particularly enjoyed the twist in the last line. - Owl |
