Who Do You Pity?

Who do you pity of me and of you?
Which has the more laden heart of the two?
The one who has loved you through long empty years
Or the one whose regrets hold the bitterest tears?

Which one will be more contently reposed
When the last breath is drawn and cold eyelids are closed?
The one who has paid the most heart wrenching cost
Or the one who was blind to the love that was lost?

At the end of the journey, one carries a debt
For the one dies in love and the one with regret
If God were to grant one more lifetime to choose
I would welcome the option to love and to lose

But the deepest bereavement through torrents of tears
Is of sweet treasured time turned to long wasted years

Great Stuff!  "If God were to grant one more lifetime to choose
I would welcome the option to love and to lose", excellent verse!!

My only question is why if you choose to love and lose does it all turn to "wasted years"?

I read your words as I prepare to attend services for my Aunt, who passed away Monday morning.

My family has indeed suffered many losses these past five years, and it is serendipitous that I read your grace today, as I was just thinking that I still don't know what to say to be of any comfort.

But I wanted you to know that recently I had an epiphany of sorts. I have made a conscious decision to celebrate the lives of my loved ones, even as I allow myself to selfishly mourn their absence.

I was blessed to be born into a large, loving family, and I would not trade one minute of the joy of knowing them to erase a year of grief.

So I can smile too, and say, "No, don't pity me--I am one of the lucky ones."

I have been blessed by much love in my life, and today, your poem, your words, with all of your grace and wisdom spoke the message I couldn't seem to give in words.

Thank you Liz--for although I doubt you meant this for me personally, I will carry it with me in my heart.

You are so lovely.

Liz - Your poems are ALWAYS so well written and so true.  You are an incredible poet and person.  It is a pleasure to read your words, but a real devil to emulate your talent.  Can't be done.

Hi Liz,

All I guess I can say is serenity blaze said so very much that I too feel, and that I am in awe of the pure beauty and honesty your poetry reveals, this one I shall treasure so very much.

Love, Cerenity
