        Like you...

         wings spread in blue brilliance,
             flashed, neon as cobalt,
                through mercury morning;

         regal crest deepened indigo,
             he surveyed with quiet savvy
                prospects of a warm welcome;

         unexpected harbinger of winter,
             a lone observer on my threshold
                sought refuge from the rain;

         found delight in a solitary bed,
             the phantasma of summer roses,
                petals quiescently shed;

         held rapt a cerulean dream,
             aloft, on my breathless heartbeat,
                wings spread in blue brilliance

                                             ...and flew.

Seymour, They sure do! Am please you stopped to read this morning.

I tried for a long time to post a picture of a Stellar's Jay with this poem, but finally gave up.  Rarely does one see them in town where I live, although I have seen them in the woods, so I was very surprised to see one on my front porch one morning! So beautiful. In comparison to the crows and gulls, he was stellar!

Oh, Marge! You are a darling!  How beautiful he is, too....

  I got blurry eyed last night trying to get a picture posted.  I have one in my files, but there was no url listed in the properties that I could manage correctly.

Oh, Klassy Lassy - what a wonderful combination!  Your talent, a stellar jay and Marge Tindal's beautiful photo!

I loved your poem, (both because of its excellence and because it was about nature) but know absolutely nothing of American birds and was dying to know what stellar jays (or even any jays) look like - and lo and behold!  There he was, sitting in Marge's response!

Thank you Klassy Lassy and Marge!

Thank you, Owlisa!  Wasn't that sweet of her?  Stellar Jay's are very raucous, too. They think they own the woods.  A few years ago, I cared for someone with Alzheimers.  Her home was in a park-like setting overlooking a bay.  There were woods of Douglas Fir trees and Myrtle shrub, Rhododenrons and wildlife.  I would watch the Stellar's jays go into screeching tirades as the chipmunks raided the bird feeders.  They thought they had a monopoly on the seed.  There was a mourning dove, and lots of Kingfishers there, too, and fawns would come into the yard.  What a joy it was watching them!

You've chosen one of my favorite birds for this fine piece of writing.  As you've caught one in urban living, you made a rare sighting as I've only seen them in the woodlands.
I really liked your imagery in this; it is a very pleasurable read.  I confess I'm never too sure about unstructured writing as I need the crutches of rhyme and meter.

Nice to meet you kayjay!  I write rhyming poetry quite frequently.  An instructor told me once it was archaic, but I'm learning to free write some now.   Old habits die hard.

Oh Karen. It takes such talent to write a bird on the wing but you have done it beautifully.

Marge's picture has enhanced your work wonderfully!

Somehow, I knew this would be about a bird, even before I opened it to read. And what a treat it is. You have captured it so beautifully.

I was watching a group of four blue jays the other day come to my feeder and try to scare off a woodpecker who was hiding seeds in a hole in the tree where the feeder hangs. The woodpecker ignored them, so they instead put on quite a comic perfomance for me, dancing at each other with spread wings and using every call they know for music. I can't wait to get back there and see my birds. For now, I have my cockatiel for company!

Lady, Thank you...I agree, the picture adds so much.  Stellar's jays are gorgeous birds, aren't they?  I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched that bird from my living room window on a December day.  I didn't move a muscle, wanting to watch as long as I could.  I haven't seen another jay since.

~~~~
Caroline, I'm so envious if you have blue jays to watch.  I enjoy the birds around here, but there are no brilliant colored birds usually. We did have a flock of Robins about a month ago.  That was unusual since the crows generally chase them away.
My daughter had a Quaker Parrot for quite a long time.  Lucy got out of her cage and flew out the door one day.  Lee was heart broken.  She adored that bird.  I imagagine your cockatiel is a lively companion, too.  Smart birds!
~~~~~~~

Jo, thank you for the lovely compliment. It makes me happy that you enjoyed this poem. I'm looking forward to having time to play with writing a bit more.  I love your work!

Klassy Lassy, I loved your bird-talk response to mine, and ice-queen's too.  Thank you both for broadening my understanding and knowledge of nature in a foreign (well, foreign to me!) country.

Thank you, Toerag!  So, pleased you stopped to read!

~~~~~
Owlisa, it was my pleasure.  I have been curious about the wildlife in South Africa, too.  I correspond with several people there, and wonder about the birds there.
~~~~~
Marge, your true story about your birds is just awesome.  I wanted to share it with my daughter, but she said it would make her cry when I told her the subject of the poem.

~~~~~
midnitesun,  I've never owned a bird, but I really do enjoy their antics in the wild.  I'm so glad you enjoyed this poem.  It was a stellar inspiration.
I thank everyone of you for the encouragement.
