Gypsy Sparrow
~*Marge Tindal*~

Dad called us gypsy sparrows, fluttering in unexpectedly
Stealing his heart with our antics, then flitting off to play
Mother always smiled each time he'd use that phrase
Gypsy sparrows ~ gypsy sparrows, please don't fly away

Times they changed, we flew the nest
Off to see the world, giving it of our best
Days passed into years of nesting on our own
until Dad urgently called one day
Gypsy sparrows ~ gypsy sparrows
Please, please fly straight home

Feathers in a flutter brought us home to cry
Saying goodbye to Mother, whose time had come to fly

Storing things in the attic, I came across a chest
Filled with memorabilia of things that Mom liked best
A photograph of parental youth, caught my eye in glee
My parents before I knew them, dated June,1943

Frayed edges of photographic memories
of young love in it's blooming
I turned it over then to see
script of Father's hand written for his bride to be

Beverly ... sweet Beverly~
My love, my darling wife to be
promise you will wait for me
I've flown across the ocean to another land
to fight a war that I have tried
so hard to understand
I do what I must do ...
But know I will return to you
In my heart forever stay ...
Gypsy sparrow ~ gypsy sparrow
please don't fly away
All my love ...
~Jack

Then tucked in tiny box of lace
a fold of creased memories I embraced
As I tenderly read my mother's reply
that brought a tender tear to my eye~

Jack ... my Jack~
I wait with a true heart
to hold you in my arms again
Come home, come home
as quickly as you can ...
in this world of many,
for me there is not any
other who could hold a candle to you ...
Hurry home, hurry home
for I am faithfully waiting,
no hesitating ... to become your bride
to be always by your side~
Come my man ... for we have a nest to fill
with our everlasting love
in anticipation of our own Gypsy Sparrows to come~

Dad came in, sat with me. I held him in his sorrow
Tears poured forth for all the years
they smiled into each other's tomorrows
We placed the photograph on the mantel, side by side,
with another taken recently, of Dad and his life-long bride
Memories remain within a heart
of a love so truly known
Though far beyond the rainbowed skies
his gypsy sparrow has flown

Oh Marge...this is heart rending and wonderful!  What a metaphor, Gypsy Sparrows...love and devotion for so many years, the absolute hub of his life...  and you posting their love poems in retrospect!... You write so beautifully and the poem is presented exquisitely.  Thank you for sharing your treasures with such poignancy and tenderness. (My eyes are brimming.)

Hugs, ~ Karen

This is an exquisite piece of writing.

How very very special this is.

Thank you, ladies for lifting my heart with your replies+

My mother's birth-of-day is today ...
she has been gone from our lives since 1995
and I'm needing to express some of the
wonderful things of remember~

Days of remember bring visions of my mother and father back to my heart ... how like them both to have had the poetic blood to pass on to this daughter~

Mother ... Daddy ... may I always, always make you both word-proud of your daughter~

I have great need to plunder the drawers of memorabilia .... lace hankies, papered-words of poetry, photographs ... anything that Mother held, loved, cherished and fondly tucked away for me to find~

*sigh* ... the 'missing' lays heavy in the heart ... now I must make the time to sift the beautiful memories of a lady ... a true lady that I had the good fortune of having for my Mother~

Yes, they are, indeed~

I step up the rungs of gentle memories~

My mother would have just LOVED knowing what wonderful friends I have made at this circle~
Yes, she would have~
