Earth is riddled with horrors;
a daily spectacle of pain; of death
for so many millions –
I sense this, each day –
it’s in the air we breathe,
in the waters carried by the clouds
falling as tears upon the ground.

How long, I have been wondering,
before the many sense this also?
But the labour of the oppressed
and the blood of the dying
is of little concern to those
whose lives are “as good as it gets.”

As long as it’s not happening
right here in our own back yard,
why should we care?
Why should we worry about it?
Oh, it’s great entertainment,
human horror on the evening news,
it’s daily fare - it’s everywhere,
but not in my back yard.

Couldn’t happen here –
This is a safe zone.
Reasonable government,
reasonable people; reasonable laws;
equitable resource distribution:
that’s who we are and what we do –
that’s what we believe
and that’s good enough.

But I still wonder: is it good enough?
Is it true? ‘Cause if it isn’t true
then it cannot be good enough.

Yes, indeed there are horrors in this world. All one has to do to see them ~ if they're not living them!!! ~ is to turn on the TV.

Personally, I have to periodically go on a news fast. That's "fast" ~ not "fest"!

I know that is like putting blinders on ~ but I do it for my personal survival! I pray for the world and then go into my own!

I can sense your frustration ~ and your caring! A powerful piece of writing, WindWalker!

thank you for this--I've tried to write about it, but I get too emotional.

Too emotional

sigh

that's what they keep telling me, but I think it's preferable to not caring.

Thanks for your words m'friend.

I felt compelled to read your poem once more. It really made me take notice. I was very impressed at how passionately and at how well you expressed the feelings that so many of us have.
It is important that each of us does something that is within our power to help make a difference. I know that I personally could do more. I do a little bit here and a little bit there ~ give food to food banks, collect clothes for disaster victims, donate money for good causes etc. etc. ~ and I pray. I mean reeealllly pray!

Thank you for expressing so powerfully what most of us feel. Hopefully, your words might spur others to help make our world a better place in which to live.
